His backpack was already bulging with electronics and books. She huffed, and I slipped him a twenty, mouthing a thank you behind Claudia’s broad back. He palmed it like a pro, tucking it into his jeans pocket while I handed Claudia her cane. The aromatic clove smell drifted toward me, greeting my approach with a fragrant kiss. He’d dug through my clothes again, unearthing a dark green fisherman’s sweater Maddy brought back for me from Killybegs. Jae swam in it, and he’d pulled down its hem until it covered his knees, probably hoping it would keep his legs warmer than his torn jeans could.

p>A Cole McGinnis Mystery

Cole Kenjiro McGinnis, ex-cop and PI, is trying to get over the shooting death of his lover when a supposedly routine investigation lands in his lap. Investigating the apparent suicide of a prominent Korean businessman’s son proves to be anything but ordinary, especially when it introduces Cole to the dead man’s handsome cousin, Kim Jae-Min.

Jae-Min’s cousin had a dirty little secret, the kind that Cole has been familiar with all his life and that Jae-Min is still hiding from his family. The investigation leads Cole from tasteful mansions to seedy lover’s trysts to Dirty Kiss, the place where the rich and discreet go to indulge in desires their traditional-minded families would rather know nothing about.

It also leads Cole McGinnis into Jae-Min’s arms, and that could be a problem. Jae-Min’s cousin’s death is looking less and less like a suicide, and Jae-Min is looking more and more like a target. Cole has already lost one lover to violence―he’s not about to lose Jae-Min too.

OMG, I loved this book!! I very rarely buy books that cost as much as this one ($6.99) when I don't know the author (been burned by poor writing too many times) because I have kindle unlimited and I have many books to choose from for just 10 bucks a month; however, this book was reduced to .99 cents for one day and I bought it....great decision on my part.
I am also leery of buying books written in first person narrative because so many authors do it so poorly--Rhys Ford is not one of them. She is probably one of the best authors I have read using the first person narrative style. She also has a lot of humor in her writing:
Tipping the bottle back, I doused my face with beer. Somehow my mouth moved when I wasn't looking. Wiping off the foam, I muttered at him, "Laugh and I'll kick you in the nuts."
"You couldn't find my nuts right now if I had my pants down and was waving them in front of you."
She can also make you want to cry in other more serious parts of the book:
The sentient part of my mind-the part that knew I was in a dream--screamed to get out. It knew Rick never made it to the hospital.....as Rick died all over again in my nightmares. Again. Always dying and I'm always helpless to stop it.
This is also a book with, what I call, real people sex…..in other words, they actually do something besides have sex constantly. Some books have the MC’s having so much sex that it becomes totally unbelievable—even the energizer bunny needs new batteries to keep going and going and going. This is a book that has a lot of plot with some sex (instead of a lot of sex and a minute plot).
I have already purchased the second book(I will be buying all 6 in the series) and I am loving it just as much as the first.
I highly recommend this book and a further suggestion—if you like audio books(and you buy this on Amazon) go for the extra $1.99 for the audio version….the narrator is fabulous.
This is the first book I have read by Rhys Ford, but I am obviously going to buy at least 5 more to complete this series then see what else this talented author has written.

In my never ending search for a kick-ass plot, I stumbled across an author named Rhys Ford, known by many for her awesome food tease and cute pet pictures all over social media, among other things. It was a year ago that I picked a book called Dirty Kiss (or, Dorthi Ki Seu if ur Korean but bear with me cause I'm bad with phonetics) and met the absolute and most gorgeous (or at least in my top 3) book boyfriends of all times: Kim-Jae Min, better half of the main character.

Enter Cole McGinnis, PI, L.A. resident and very lucky when it comes to getting shot at. He's the heart and soul of Rhys's phenomenal series. As you can imagine, the combination of Cole and Jae together is just pure FUEL. And where Jae is a smooth, sweet, very gentle Korean guy scared to death about his family finding out he's gay, Cole is an ex vice cop turned private investigator, troubled after a few years about the (still) mystery surrounding his partner killing his lover and then commiting suicide.

Yea, twisted, but KILLER PLOT.

This book (and the following 4, including 'Down and Dirty') are possibly one of THE GREATEST gay romance books I have ever read. Really. The plots are phenomenal. The writing style
is phenomenal. The characters are phenomenal. Jae is hot. Cole is hot. His brother Ichiro is hot. Bobby, well, Bobby is NOT as hot as Cole, Jae and Ichi but he's in the range, and Scarlet reminds me of Conchita Wurst. Also, the secondary characters are hilarious, the sweet moments are sweet, the hot moments are hot and nobody who hasn't SUFFERED from the famous and worldwide feared, God forsaken L.A traffic will know how 2 ldescribe it as good as Rhys does. Ha! Tell me that I don't go Downtown other than to see my Dentist every six months and I end up w anxiety attacks

I really enjoyed Dirty Kiss and have high hopes for the Cole McGinnis series. Cole is an ex. Vice cop turned private investigator after his best friend and work partner went crazy and pumped him full of lead nearly killing him, shot and killed Cole’s boyfriend Rick and then nipped off to his squad car where he proceeded to blow his brains out. Needless to say, losing the two most important people in his life and never knowing the reason for his partner’s meltdown has left Cole with some issues. He’s struggled with his grief and avoided relationships in the years since Rick’s death.

Then his brother Mike asks him to take a case as a favor. Mike runs a security company and the son of one of his clients seems to have committed suicide. The very traditional Korean family swear that their son would never hurt his family in this way and have asked to have someone investigate. At first it seems pretty cut and dry and Cole is convinced he was just hired to “sniff around and then go away”; but once he starts sniffing he discovers that the very traditional, conservative Korean family have more skeletons in their closet than a cemetery.

One of the skeletons takes the form of Jae-Min; the hot younger cousin to Kim Hyun-Shik aka the dead guy. It also turns out that the married and father to a young son Shik died in Dirty Kiss or Dorthi Ki Seu– a gay sex club. Cole and Jae-Min have lust at first sight, which does turn into a pretty sweet relationship; amidst someone taking a very dim view to Cole’s investigation – in the form of attempts on both Cole and Jae’s lives and an ever expanding body count.

The mystery is decent; although it’s easy to figure out the motivation behind the murders as you follow Cole along collecting pieces of the puzzle. Cole and Jae have some pretty hot sex. Cole is sort of the “alpha male” but Jae isn’t really twinky, and their relationship isn’t easy. Cole has his grief and guilt issues, and Jae has his Korean family issues. Cole is out and doesn’t care who knows despite not having always gotten a positive reception; Jae is in the back of the closet and is prepared to do his familial duty which involves at some point sucking it up, getting married and having children. Jae struggles with both his issues and Cole’s:
“When I’m with you…being with you…pulls everything out from under me. I shouldn’t want you, but I do. There’s nothing right with your mind, and you go around wishing you were dead. I can’t do that. I have to take care of my family. I Can’t take care of you too”.

Jae has to send money to his mother and sisters; and if they find out he’s gay, he’ll shame the family and his mother will refuse his money. Apparently taking the attitude of “well; then starve b!tch” is very ugly-American. Cole doesn’t get where Jae is coming from any more than I did and Cole is actually half Asian – although as Jae points out, Cole’s mother died in childbirth and he never knew any of his Japanese relatives – so culturally speaking, he’s as white as Sunbeam bread. But eventually Cole does come to understand Jae’s culture and what family means to him; and they both struggle to figure out what sort of relationship – if any – they can have on a longish term basis.

Both Cole and Jae were likable characters; and being as this is a series, it was populated with a lot of (mostly) endearing secondary characters that will likely be making future appearances. Cole’s one and only office assistant Claudia and her brood: “Our interview was short and sweet: I told her I was gay and had some issues, she told me she was black and had high blood pressure”. Cole’s moderately homophobic brother Mike, his recently out of the closet and retired cop friend Bobby and the Dirty Kiss female impersonator/mistress to a member of the Korean embassy – Scarlet.

I’m hooked; and I want to see Cole and Jae somehow get a HEA.
