In one of the most original and stunning debuts of the season, Glenna McReynolds brings historical romance readers the experience they've been . Frankly, the first time I tried reading The Chalice and the Blade, I was bored. I didn't hate it, but I wasn't the least enthralled either.

In one of the most original and stunning debuts of the season, Glenna McReynolds brings historical romance readers the experience they've been waiting for: a novel. However, desperate for something to read I picked it up again and gave it another chance-and thank goodness I did! The worlds McReynolds weaves in this book, and the sequels (Dreamstone and Prince of Time), are so rich and intriguing that I have since reread the trilogy several times, picking up new things I've missed in previous readings.

This book was very enjoyable, and I love Glenna Mcreynolds' fantasy world, which is better than many fantasy genre novels I have read - I didn't feel like I was reading another D&D-based book. Not realizing it was part of a series, I had read the second one first, and honestly, I liked it better than this one, but I think it's just that I like the hero and heroine characters better, not that it was necessary a better story. And this one is definitely a good story. I am glad I took the chance, I was very pleased with it.

I really enjoyed this first book in a new epic fantasy series. The only reason it wasn't given five stars was only regarding a matter of personal preference. I like romance and sex as much as the next person, but I don't understand the need to portray it quite so graphically in a book that otherwise is potentially quite appealing to a younger audience. I know, there is also graphic violence throughout. Both of these factors are matters involving parental guidance and I wouldn't even mention them if I believed the sex as it was presented and, to a lesser degree, the level of description of the. violence, was necessary to advance the plot. Again, this is a personal preference only, and only as it might relate to younger readers. Otherwise the book was very well written and the kind of epic fantasy tale I love to read. I really hesitated before I brought up my concern because it is such a good book. It would still have held my attention without these details. This should be a great series.

This first book in the Chalice Trilogy will probably get you hooked for the entire series!

Set in 12th century Wales, the story has all the elements of a good fantasy in the tradition of Lord of the Rings or Belgariad. Wizards, pagan religions, magic, dark and unexplored caves complete with dragons - all combine to weave a fascinating story of a warrior recently returned from the Crusades, an orphan princess, and an evil lord - none of whom turn out to be what we think they are at the start of the story. You'll just have to read it for yourself to find out!

I read this book when it first came out and enjoyed it greatly. I through time forgot to watch for the other books, and when it was offered as a free read, I downloaded it. As I read into it I remembered reading it before and I got as much enjoyment out if it the second time as the first, and now the other two have been written I will be buying these as well. You won't be disappointed in this book and from the trailer at the end of the next in the series I would have to say you won't be disappointed in those as well. I am buying them, don't let this great story slip through your fingers as I did once, read them!

You bounce from perspective to perspective so much at times it's hard to follow who's view you are in. Very liberal with history that had an interesting twist with fantasy.

Descriptions are rich for both characters, surroundings and action. Can be a stand-alone book but, for me, I would like to see what happens in Carn Merrioneth's future and what the future holds for Mycheal, Llyna, and others in the book. Also would like to see the results of what happened to those at the weir for perhaps more magic will be weaved..or perhaps not and the losses are final.

This book is a great paranormal romance with deep characters, real plot and NONE of those stupid phoney "misunderstandings" romances are littered with. (Oh, but does he love me when I know he blah, blah.) Very good read.
LOOK - there are *16* *years of reviews here - from 1997 - 2013 so far. This book is starting to get into "classic" territory.

I loved this book!! I admit, at first, I would get tangled up in the sentence structure and nomenclature! However, I kept with it and I'm so glad I did!!
Excellent story and very well written!
If you love Game of Thrones, you will love The Chlice Trilogy. Not quite as good, but still, I found I could not put it down!!
Okay, the author has talent. However, while I was looking for a sword and sorcery type of book for which this qualifies, I didn't really want the soft porn (kindly called erotica) that threads its way through the entire plot. This may be a big draw to some readers, but does nothing for me but make it hard to get through the rest of the book. I'd give it a 2.5 out of 5.
