It does justice to its title: Conceptual Astronomy.

It does justice to its title: Conceptual Astronomy. Being trained as a physicist, I was amazed by the use of key words expressing the central idea, such as: Newton's First Law: The Interial Law, Newton's Second Law: The Force Law, Newton's Third Law: The Reaction Law. Same goes with Kepler's Laws of Planetary Motion.

Michael Zeilik, Professor of Physics and Astronomy and former Presidential Lecturer at the University of New Mexico, specializes in innovative, introductory courses for the novice, non-science major student.

Conceptual astronomy: A novel model for teaching postsecondary science courses. American Journal of Physics, 65 (10): Mike Zeilik I took a faculty position at the University of New Mexico directly from graduate school at Harvard, where I had pioneered the use of the Personalized System of Instruction/Keller Plan in astronomy. I threw myself into the introductory astronomy course for novices at UNM and was shocked at the poor performance of the class as a whole.

Stephen A. Gregory, Michael Zeilik. This focused, advanced undergraduate text provides broad coverage of astronomy and astrophysics with a strong emphasis on physics. This text has an algebra and trigonometry prerequisite, but calculus is preferred. Features: "Concept Applications" are fully worked-out, in-chapter problems that focus on an important concept found within that chapter. Key Equations and Concepts" neatly summarize the important equations and concepts found in each chapter

Conceptual Change in Introductory-Level Astronomy Courses. Conceptual astronomy: A novel model for teaching postsecondary science courses. Michael Zeilik, Candace Garrett Schau, Nancy Page Garland Mattern, Shannon Laurell Hall, Kathleen W. Teague, Walter J. An innovative, conceptually based instructional model for teaching large undergraduate astronomy courses was designed, implemented, and evaluated in the Fall 1995 semester. This model was based o. More).

Uses an innovative, imaginative approach to the subject, stressing scientific model making. Develops concepts from the concrete to the abstract, resulting in a traditional earth to universe organization. Identifies 25 basic issues which tie astronomer's current view of the universe together. End-of-chapter summaries unite key terms to key ideas in order to reinforce their relationships for students.

I'm sorry I bought this. It covers a broad range of tics, all superficially.

The copy I received was very marked-up and uninviting. I would try something different if I had to do it again.

This is one of the most amazing books, I have come across in my life. Key Ideas are put down in separate boxes, all with use of only elementary mathematics. I have been using this book as supplementary reading in my freshman to senior classes.
The same style is followed while dealing with abstract ideas of mathematics, e. g., models and the conditions which they must satisfy (with everything wrapped up in a single word: Explain, Predict, Verifiable, Chageable - of course, I add a fifth condition: Mathematically Consistent).
It is not that the book is all dry pouring up concepts of physics, matheamtics and astronomy. It has beautiful pictures (in fact, breathtaking pictures), it has support material listed, with a question test bank available, all making it the most suitable textbook to adopt for non-mathematics majors.
It is a pity that such a book is out of print. Books like Conceptual Astronomy: A Journey of Ideas "never" die.
