Introducing the Universe Paperback – November 19, 2002. by Felix Pirani (Author), Christine Roche (Contributor). I am a huge fan of the Introducing-series. These books (of which I own several titles) explain very thoroughly in only a small number of pages, difficult topics.

The Universe for Beginners, republished as Introducing the Universe, is a 1993 graphic study guide to cosmology written by Felix Pirani and illustrated by Christine Roche.

The universe is expanding, but how long has the expansion been going on? Will it expand forever, or collapse in a Big Crunch, a Big Bang in reverse?

90% or more of the matter in the universe is unseen.

From Aristotle to Newton, Einstein and quantum mechanics, Introducing the Universe recounts the revolutions in physics and astronomy that underlie the present-day scientific picture of the Universe. It describes the scale of things, from atoms to galactic superclusters, and sketches the cosmological theories, based on Einstein's general relativity, used to describe the Universe's expansion. The book also discusses the significance of the cosmic background satellite observations, and explains why current theories have nothing reliable to say about whether the Universe had a 'beginning'.

I am a huge fan of the Introducing-series. These books (of which I own several titles) explain very thoroughly in only a small number of pages, difficult topics. And they read pleasantly. This one though, explains nothing at all. Do not buy it! It starts off with denouncing the existence of God as not "scientific", and "proofs" this statement not by scientific arguments, but by philosphical arguments from mystery religions. A fallacy. Instead of giving an overview of the universe from big to small or vice versa, and the different cosmological world views there are, it in-depth tries to dwell on quantum mechanics, history of astronomy and the like. And a bad job is done on those topics, I can tell you. Forget about this book: it's trash. Buy Introducing Quantum Mechanics instead. That last book is truly excellent.

This book was waaaay cheaper through Amazon than it was at my local bookstore. I ended up having to drop the class but I was able to return the book to Amazon. All service was excellent including the condition of the book (which was brand spankin' new), the shipment, and the return, and refund. Thanks so much for an easy transaction.

Here the Cosmology lesson is nothing short of amazingly rendered and illustrated. This is a great unification for books on physics. You will keep referencing its history and explanations for some time to come.

This book tries to outline in broad general terms our current understanding of the Universe. It tells us at the outset that the stars and galaxies we are seening now , we are seeing as they appeared millions of years ago. It gives a small history tour and tries to show how our understanding of the Universe has been transformed. Where once we had a picture of the universe in which we on the Earth were at the center, now we have one in which even our Galaxy is not at the center. The book also describes the basic elements of the Universe and the processes which obtain in the formation of Stars and Galaxies. It makes it clear that Cosmology is a developing Science in which we still do not have definite answers to many of the most important questions.
The clear purpose of the work is to whet the reader's interest in learning more about the Universe.
