I personally like picture books of pretty marine animals. I purchased this one for the quality of the photos.

Dan is also a professional underwater photographer; his photos have appeared in numerous books, magazines and newspapers; and have also been used in displays at aquariums and museums. I personally like picture books of pretty marine animals. I only wish that the author accepted that he has made a picture book, not a field guide, and adopted a more suitable design that would have done his photos more justice.

I was hoping for quite a bit more for what I paid. Species accounts are very minimal, pictures tend to be small (although clear), and I would not consider the book comprehensive in any way. Frustatingly, the auther references other books that are more thorough for specific groups... but I don't want a scientific treatise or a textbook. I just want a better field guide, or guide in general!

The book does get three stars for the pictures and information present. I just wish there was more of it!

This volume is composed of a collection of attractive color photographs of marine animals, taken from life. If this is what you are looking for, then this small book may be for you. If, on the other hand, you want a useful field guide to marine life, look elsewhere. The choice of species to be included seems to have been largely based on how photogenic the animal is, not on how common it is or how likely to be encountered. On the positive side, the names of the animals have been vetted by respected experts in the various fields. I personally like picture books of pretty marine animals. I purchased this one for the quality of the photos. I only wish that the author accepted that he has made a picture book, not a field guide, and adopted a more suitable design that would have done his photos more justice. An occasional full page image would have been welcome, as well as a larger format.

This is a good pictorial following of 'Between Pacific Tides'. Gotshall has presented a nicely done, well researched, attractive, usable volume.

I have this in my office and refer to it often to look up organisms. It's great and sturdy in the field as well. Great pictures and good information.

This book has good color reference pictures, I use these for my woodcarvings, it worked for me, I am always collecting reference books

great book. Covers all the inverts that the Humann book doesn't cover. The only field guide for inverts in this area.

I like it, but several scientific names are wrong or chance species, or have old scientific names, but have nice pictures
