Oldshue's book suffers from the publisher's weaknesses; McGraw Hill tends to produce books directly from their magazine articles. The book suffers from two weaknesses: it is old and does not include much on solid-solid mixing. This text obviously started out as a series of articles written in the 70's in Chemical Engineeering magazine. Fortunately, unlike many Chemical Engineering authors, James Oldshue took it well beyond a magazine article. New computer software has allowed computerized flow simulation to replace many dye tests.

Effective scale-up is essential for successful bioprocessing. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves. Scale-up of aerobic fermentations is often carried out on the basis of a constant oxygen transfer coefficient, kLa, to ensure the same oxygen supply rate to support normal growth and metabolism of the desired high cell populations.

Jim Oldshue was an important leader and supporter of the CIIQ/IACChE. The Oldshue Lecture alternates between the AIChE Annual Meetings and the Interamerican Congresses, which take place every two years. He was President of the AIChE in 1979 and President of the CIIQ/IACChE in 1995. Jim was a recipient of the prestigious Víctor Márquez award in 1983, which is conferred by the CIIQ/IACChE. Jim was an ambassador of the profession who visited more than 100 countries. This year's distinguished lecturer is Dr. Carlos Rinaldi, Chair and Professor, University of Florida. Dr. Rinaldi will deliver his lecture at the 2019 AIChE Annual Meeting.
