An introduction to southern California butterflies. by Fred Heath, Fred Heath, Herbert Clarke. Published 2004 by Mountain Press Pub. Co. in Missoula, Mont.

Butterflies are the poster children of the insect world. They suggest warm, sunny days filled with beautiful flowers. Today a large and growing interest in anything to do with butterflies can be seen in such diverse areas as jewelry, clothes, live butterfly releases at weddings, advertisements, festivals, home butterfly gardens, and specialty tours and field trips. In addition, many museums, zoos, and private organizations have opened walk-through butterfly gardens with free-flying butterflies imported from all over the world. (Taken from the introduction to An Introduction to Southern California Butterflies.)More than 250 glorious color photographs fill this guide to these beautiful bugs, enabling the reader to identify the 89 species of Southern California butterflies, along with their favorite habitats and food plants. Includes information on butterfly classification, life cycle, and behavior, butterfly watching, creating a garden to attract butterflies, and protecting habitat and endangered species. Also contains a species checklist for recording butterfly sightings. Everyone from the novice to the seasoned butterfly enthusiast will find this book useful and enjoyable.
Great little book -- not totally comprehensive, but good images and info on host plants and nectar plants.
It is everthing that I imagine it to be.
Friends recommended the book to me
since I have several different butterflies
in my yard now I can identify them
better with the help of my new book.
Love it!!!
Beautiful book with great pictures.
This was in terrible condition, pages were water damaged and stuck together. Not readable. Had to send back
A great resource for SoCal butterfly enthusiasts. Bought more for friends as gifts.
Complete and easy to use.
A good book to enhance ones knowledge of butterflies and the plants that attract them. In So. California the butterfly population has declined during past few years. We are trying to attract to our backyards by planting plants they like. We have seen an increase during the past year.
Sets the standard that I wish other butterfly field guides would follow. Although as an "introduction" it doesn't cover all the species in Southern California, it usually provides photos of male and female specimens of the species it does cover along with photos of the caterpillar's host plant. Quite often there is an "identification" box indicating the size, how the butterfly differs from similar butterflies, and whether there are any diagnostic markings.
Please, Fred, write a guide for all of California. The book we have has a lot of interesting material and is worth owning, but the field guide part needs work.
