Scavengers are animals that consume dead organisms that have died from causes other than predation. While scavenging generally refers to carnivores feeding on carrion, it is also a herbivorous feeding behavior. Scavengers play an important role in the ecosystem by consuming dead animal and plant material. Decomposers and detritivores complete this process, by consuming the remains left by scavengers.

The book is OK but I don't agree with Hyenas being lumped in with Scavengers. Brown hyenas (pictured on the cover) are mostly scavengers but Spotted hyenas are very skilled predators and are no more scavengers than lions are. It is a misleading and perpetuates a myth and ill feelings towards a very interesting animal.

Phenomenal storytelling in a nonfiction book. My 5-year-old son has been obsessed with hyenas for quite a while, and it's hard to find good hyena items. This book was perfect. It tells the story of a female hyena and includes lots of factual info. There are other books in this series (Animal Scavengers) and we will be getting them.
