It provides a different perspective on one of the most difficult questions in the current global warming debate: namely, just how much of the recent temperature rise can be attributed to natural causes? This book examines the complex analysis required to assess the evidence for cycles with a minimum of mathematics.

The unresolved debate on the existence of weather cycles is explored in detail within this book. The evidence for and against the existence of cycles in the weather is examined and the difficulties in establishing the credentials of cycles discussed. A wide range of events from the ice ages to the El Niño and many examples of apparently cyclic behaviour are presented, with evidence from both instrumental observations and other records such as tree rings, ice cores and ocean sediments. The general conclusion is that, with few exceptions, the case for weather cycles is not proven. The complex analysis needed to look at the evidence for cycles is examined with the minimum of mathematics, so that this book will appeal to readers with an interest in how the weather works, as well as to the workers in this important and controversial field.

If you want to be able to engage in informed debate about things like the global warming, you should study weather forecasting, physics, biology, oceanography, astrophysics, and weather cycles. This book is an amazing explanation of the latter. College level material. Highly recommended.

Read this book before reading Burroughs other book called "Climate Change in Prehistory" and you'll get a thorough feel for the impact of weather and evolution across the planet. You'll begin to realize that the impact of weather and disease (not mentioned in the book) form a very important dimension to the evolutionary process. Great read but dense in detail.

This book does an amazing job telling the story on behalf of climate. While the statistical side of things are presented, the book is not number laden and over-factual. It is very conceptual and theory-driven. I recommend this book for anyone from students interested in weather, to those who call themselves weather experts.
