The German mathematician Felix Klein discovered in 1879 that the surface that we now call the Klein quartic has many remarkable properties. Since then, mathematicians have discovered that the same object comes up in different guises in many areas of mathematics, from complex analysis and geometry to number theory. This volume explores the rich tangle of properties and theories surrounding this multiform object.

MSRI Publications - Volume 35. The Eightfold Way: The Beauty of. . The Eightfold Way: The Beauty of Klein's Quartic Curve. Felix Klein discovered in the 1870's that the simple and elegant equation x3y + y3z + z3x (in complex projective coordinates) describes a surface having many remarkable properties, including 336-fold symmetry - the maximum possible for any surface of this genus.
The book is unique in that it also includes an article on the aesthetic aspects of mathematics. In fact several of the papers collected here make reference to the beauty of mathematics. The book consists of a preface by Silvio Levy, an article by Claire and Helaman Ferguson about the sculpture, seven mathematical articles related to the Klein Quartic curve, and finally Silvio Levy's English translation of Felix Klein's original article. William Thurston's article is a copy of the hand-out given to the general public at the unveiling.
