Algebra for College Students "is typically used in a very comprehensive 1-semester Intermediate Algebra course serving as a gateway course to other college-level mathematics courses. The goal of the Intermediate Algebra course is to provide students with the mathematical skills that are prerequisites for courses such as College Algebra, Elementary Statistics, Liberal-Arts Math and Mathematics for Teachers. He then received his BS in Physics and his MS in Mathematics from SUNY at New Paltz, and he took additional graduate work at Rutgers University.

Allen R. This is a great book for brushing up on Algebra skills, in preparation for Algebra 1 or other similar classes. He is Professor Emeritus at Monroe Community College in Rochester, New York where he served for many years as the chair of the Mathematics Department. In fact, by the end of the book, you'll see that this book covers about 80% of what would be covered in a college Algebra 1 course. I think the elementary & intermediate algebra for student did a great job. This book is a good way to learn algebra if you need help

Allen R. This book is a good way to learn algebra if you need help. It helped me to learn what I needed in the lecture for me to pass my college algebra class. I learned a lot from this book.

I am studying to get back to college and this book is not really the best book to do that. It is a classroom edition and I need a few tools that only a school would be able to provide. It does have some tips and links shown for homework help sites but they need usernames and passwords that are provided by teachers/professors. I can always go through
It is exactly what I purchased and what was in the description. It was delivered on time and no damage! Thank you!

This book is an assigned book at MCC for the 098 Math course. Likewise the Intermediate book by this same author is for their 104 Math Course. This comes as no suprise since the author was the head of the mathematics department many years ago at MCC.

This review is for the Elementary Algebra book

This book has too much going on it. It is very confusing. Visually its like they spent time trying to make it look good versus giving you the information you require to do math correctly. The overusage of colors throughout the book makes it very distracting to the reader. Many things are in orange, yellow and blue making it very distracting with all of the callouts it the equivalent of an obstacle course in a textbook.

Many of the examples shown in the book lack critical information needed to complete all the problems at the end of the section. For instance in some of the examples they will show you how to do a certain problem, for example say x 1/2 +8x - y. In the examples they do not explain what to do when you have a variable in front of a fraction on a problem such as this. Their is no place to reference it. So this book only partially teaches you what you need to know. As you go through the section questions you will find that many of the questions do not have examples that can even be remotely used as a basis for what to do with the problem you are trying to solve. The book does not take a logical approach either.

I find that the book also has issues where what they are asking you questions on isn't taught until the next section which makes me ask if you havent been taught something yet how can you possibly answer it. This only further leads to anxiety over math.

Many times the teachers will tell you to get the student solution manual if you do not understand the book. This is an added cost and I believe a way for the book publisher to make more money along with the college. If you buy a book to learn from it should be written well enough that you should not need a seperate book. Also if all the information was contained in the book like it should be, you should also not need the solution manual.

The older versions of this book may have been better but the 8th edition is a disaster. The videos they reference in the book are from several years ago and have not been updated to reflect the examples in the book (where they have a camera icon). These icons are used to show the reader that their is a video for that particular math problem.

This is a great book for brushing up on Algebra skills, in preparation for Algebra 1 or other similar classes. In fact, by the end of the book, you'll see that this book covers about 80% of what would be covered in a college Algebra 1 course.

The one problem I have with the book is that so little material is devoted to functions. Just one section actually. I would like to have seen deeper coverage of functions, functional notation, etc.

Easy to understand College Algebra book. They should give this to high school students too!!!! Well plus it helps to have an awesome math teacher too, which are few and far between.

Bought it for my son's studies. What can one say about a text book? It did the job and he passed the course.

This is a great book that MCC uses for the Math 0930 Class and is required for the class thus far. I would reccommend this book to anyone who wants to get involved in the Math 0930 MCC (Metropolitan Community College) Course. Don't Pay attention to the guy from eighteen months ago or more or so, act fast and get this book.

P.S.- Amazon please try to lower the price on this book, our MCC bookstore is trying to rob us of our money at any cost they can get, plus if you do- I will tell my friends and family about what you have been doing for us MCC and other ("like minded") college students.

Thanks Again.

P.S.- Thanks for putting it up for rent, lots of people will appreciate that.

Book bought used arrived in good condition. It is excellent for a review of basic concepts. There is a wealth of exercises and a CD with an instructor going through some of them. Would buy the book again.
