The North West Highlands is also a key area in the historical development of geological science. Famous geologists of the 19th century, such as Roderick Murchison, Archibald Geikie, Benjamin. Peach and John Horne, cut their geological teeth on the rocks of Sutherland. For much of that century, the so-called ‘Highlands Controversy’ raged over the relationships of these rocks, finally ending with. The key functions of a European Geopark are to protect geological heritage, promote geology to the public, and to use geology and other aspects of its natural and cultural heritage to promote sustainable economic development, normally through responsible tourism.

On my engagement to my future wife, my father gave us a copy of a book which had belonged to Sir Archibald, a collection of letters by Adam Sedgwick to William Wordsworth, the poet, on the geology of the Lake District. Geological Survey of Great Britain, Memoirs. This volume was an author’s copy, had been presented to Sir Roderick Murchison, and had, presumably, then been passed to Sir Archibald.
Archibald Geikie, . Studies of Scotland's Old Red Sandstone strata led to the first recognition of the widespread unconformity between the upper and lower group. After leaving a banking career, Geikie undertook a year of study at the University of Edinburgh before financial restraints prevented him from continuing. In 1855, previous geological contact with Hugh Miller (1802-1856) and Sir Andrew Crombie Ramsay (1814-1891) secured him a mapping assistant post with the Geological Survey, then under the directorship of Sir Roderick Impey Murchison (1792-1871).
