Not too impressed with this book. Some of the tips were repeated, others seemed like advertisements. I didn't see a lot of practical pattern tricks, more what the internet would call "fly tying hacks" with useful stuff around your house to help. One was "go to a gun range and get used .22 rimfire cartridges for storing hair." (That seems really odd and not that helpful. At least two separate tips advocated the use of bead pliers for bead-head nymphs. Good tip...once. There was a lot on salt-water flies that I simply don't tie so that part may be useful to some, but it wasn't for me. Overall, I'd say this is a good book for people out of the beginning fly typing class and looking for more.

I have three very good fly tying books that I've learned - and I'm still learning - a lot from. David Klausmeyer's book, though it doesn't have fly tying recipes, has a lot of helpful tips that I haven't seen anywhere. Also, I love the way the book is set up. It's very easy to skim through the so-called headlines and re-read the tips and techniques that I forgot. The book also has an index, so I can easily find the subjects that will help me tie a particular fly. Better Flies Faster has speeded up my learning curve. I feel it's a great addition to any fly tying library.

I keep finding little nuggets of how to's and advice and organization that are really useful. Time and again I ask myself "Why didn't I think of that?" when I read something that helps me tie faster, better or more creatively. I have it on my tying bench as a ready reference. It is well organized and the list of contributors includes many of the very best known and credible people in the fly fishing and tying world.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who ties flies. Great tips on tools, materials, and techniques. While I had discovered many of these tips on my own, there were so many new ones that I had to make notes and post them at my bench. Also, you'll save enough on materials adapted from everyday products or cheap craft shop items to more than pay for the cost of the book. Well organized too.

I have been tying for 30 years for myself learning odds and ends along the way. Since the advent of the internet there are videos and patterns at your fingertips but this book has the most "why didn't I think of that" out of any fly tying reference I own. I believe if you are at any stage of tying you will gain some great shortcuts and tidbits for practical tying applications. I even purchased one for my dad for fathers day.

great instructional book with lots of tips

Excellent book. Many tips that are a slight twist from the way I was doing something, but make life much easier. Great book for the beginner or veteran tier. I'm not a professional tier, but have been tying for about eight years and would recommend this book to anyone.
As much as I think that Klausmeyer is a world class tyer and I often look at his stuff to see what he's up to, this wasn't my favorite of his.
