Mark Baldwin's terrific new book about his two World Cup visits, Korea in 2002 and Germany in 2006, captures the wild and woolly soccer scene, so evident right now on television screens the world over. Soccer is a worldwide phenomenon so powerful that coaches come and go in a nanosecond, refs get the boot one hour after a game, and the New York Times discusses Diego Maradona's personal pre-game rituals. Baldwin explains much of this, and with his deep understanding of the nature of fandom and the nature of the true aficionado - we can all learn from him. Plus, of course, he's very funny, delightfully so, and pinpoints those absurd traveling moments and sporting moments that often go unnoticed.

I recommend this book to confirmed soccer-ites and to newbies, like myself. It's a delight.

Like a great coach, Mark Baldwin covers every position with the best talent and options to ensure the most successful, inspiring outcome. The book is both informative to the newcomer and comforting to the journeyman and woman. Comforting in that every soccer fan knows the ecstatic excitement of following your team, falling in love with your team...and having your heart broken by that same team at the World Cup. Baldwin takes the reader on a journey, a unique road trip that eloquently and intelligently explores and comments on the countries and cultures he and his wife explore. The book is a romance, not just the close, touching relationship that his marriage evokes, but a love affair with a game little understood by America; yet slowly seducing a reluctant though intrigued nation. No doubt the US will one day be a world power in the world's most popular sport, at the most watched sporting event. Many couples and many other Americans will journey the planet to experience the joy, sorrow and satisfaction that is soccer to us, and football to the rest of the world. This book is a very readable handbook for that sojourn, full of vital information while laden with humor, especially an encounter with a somewhat staid, entitled fellow American on a flight en route to the far East. The scene is straight out of Updike/Cheaver/Theroux, the kind of comedic writing and insight that wriggles into your system and has you chuckling for days, even weeks after.

All in all a must read for all newcomers to the sport, all fans of travel literature, all supporters of "the beautiful game", and every marriage in need of adventure and the spice of life. In other words...everyone.
