Mark Baldwin's terrific new book about his two World Cup visits, Korea in 2002 and Germany in 2006, captures the wild and woolly soccer scene, so evident right now on television screens the world over. The proverbial innocent abroad, Baldwin writes with brio and insight about the intricacies of a game that outsiders can only wonder at. While himself an intrepid traveler, Baldwin's wife is somewhat more squeamish (I can relate), and so we see exactly how tough it actually is for an American to get used to a Korean breakfast.

Soccer is a worldwide phenomenon so powerful that coaches come and go in a nanosecond, refs get the boot one hour after a game, and the New York Times discusses Diego Maradona's personal pre-game rituals. Baldwin explains much of this, and with his deep understanding of the nature of fandom and the nature of the true aficionado - we can all learn from him. Plus, of course, he's very funny, delightfully so, and pinpoints those absurd traveling moments and sporting moments that often go unnoticed.
