Joshua Slocum, the first singlehanded circumnavigator and author of the classic Sailing Alone around the World (1900), was born in Nova Scotia. At sixteen he left home to work as a deepwater sailor and by 1869 commanded his first vessel. In 1871 hemarried Virginia Walker, who, along with their children, sailed with him until she died in 1884. About two years later he married his cousin Henrietta ( Hettie ) Endicott, and for their wedding trip the couple went to sea on the Aquidneck, which he owned.

This is a wonderful book, artful and revealing, about the real Joshua Slocum--Victor's father. He grew up on board, and was an observer of Slocum's many adventures, often with family. Joshua was more complicated, and more marvelous, than we knew, and his son writes with respect and often wry amazement at his father's worldwide reputation, determination and clever gamesmanship. Capt. Slocum book, "Spray," is a must-read, but Victor's take on dad and dad's world is a delight from first page to last.
