I truly do not understand the "rave" reviews I read about this author. This book was plain terrible. A waste of my time.

Pierre-Ange (Pete) Sawyer, a half-French, half-American private investigator, is hired by a former Formula 1 driver to find his estranged daughter. The course of the investigation takes Sawyer to the Cannes Film Festival, exploring the catacombs of Paris, into the rugged mountains, and through the streets of a medieval village. Along the way, Sawyer also encounters numerous unsavoury characters, including the boss of an Italian crime family, his sadistic brother, and several of their associates.

This is an excellent mystery novel. Sawyer is a great character—a complex mix of very honourable and very ruthless. The setting is France in the late 1980s. The author does an amazing job describing this setting. The reader is taken to Eze, a Medieval hilltop village with winding, narrow streets. Part of the story also takes place in the Val des Merveilles, a place where there are thousands of Bronze Age petroglyphs. (In the story they are described as Palaeolithic, which is incorrect, but as the narrator is not an archaeologist, I can let that slide). The plot of finding a missing girl is not that unique in a detective story, but it is the character of Pete Sawyer and the rich descriptions of setting that make this novel stand out.

This is the third novel in Marvin Albert’s “Stone Angel” series. While characters from earlier novels do appear, it is not necessary to read those novels to enjoy this one.
