by Elizabeth Lynn Casey

Sew Deadly by Elizabeth Lynn Casey is the first book of a cozy mystery series set in a small town in contemporary North Carolina

Sew Deadly by Elizabeth Lynn Casey is the first book of a cozy mystery series set in a small town in contemporary North Carolina. After a breakup with her fiance, Victoria "Tori" left her home in Chicago to be librarian in a small Southern town. She doesn't speak or understand Southern slang, and is not at all prepared for small-town insularity. Tori soon learns she replaced long-term librarian Dixie, who deeply resents her.

Ms. Casey deals with a difficult social issue, bullying in today's schools and by the careless words issued by children's parents at home. Another issue dealt with by sleuth, Tori Sinclair and her co-sewers, is the social status climb being challenged in today's world.

This was an Good book that JUST MISSED being GREAT! I loved the premise. The setting. The characters! I just wanted a better ending. Without spoiling it let, me try and explain. Maybe I've read too many Agatha Christie books but I like it when the killer get's exposed and everything (including motivation) is revealed. This did not give me my mystery "happy ending" it left me feeling like "What!? Did I skip a page or miss something?" The apprehension of the baddie is told almost as an aside, an afterthought, it was a real womp womp let down!

I've read two of these books and both has the unsatisfyingly low-key ending to a great build up. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE Ms. Casey give us the big reveal. It may be corny, or hackneyed, but when the discovery, reveal, and arrest is told as an off hand comment it kills (pun intended) the enjoyment of the whole story! I wanted a small Southern town mystery and I got it. I love that it has a LIBRARIAN as the main character (natch!) but I felt cheated.

If you want to read a better small town Southern murder mystery with real characters and a great reveal at the end - a truly SATISFYING Mystery end to a story -- real the Aurora Teagarden Real Murders series by Charlaine Harris. (Now a Hallmark Channel cute but watered down movie!) They're great summer reads for small town Southern murder mystery!

A delightful fun read with some romance and a couple minor mysteries.Victoria Sinclair moved to Sweet Briar South Carolina to take the head librarian position. She bought a house there. Tori, as she prefers to be known, is invited to join a sewing circle. She has much to learn about living in the south. At the library, she meets the third-grade teacher and his students. One a shy girl named Lulu becomes a friend. Things she needs keep disappearing and make it difficult to function. The light over her door is one of them. A leading belle of the town has decided the third-grade teacher will be her husband. When she is found dead behind the library Tori is the only suspect. Will Tori find answers before she arrested? I enjoyed the book and plan on reading the rest of the series. I recommend the book.

SEW DEADLY, DEATH THREADS and PINNED FOR MURDER by Elizabeth Lynn Casey.

I'm new to the party on this series. But the good news for me---I still have 5 more of the series in my TBR stack to enjoy! The newest being REMNANTS OF MURDER, released earlier this month.

I fell in love with Tori/Victoria and the people of Sweet Briar from page one of Sew Deadly. Ms. Casey kept me guessing through all 3 stories. Not only that, she kept me laughing! Out loud at times!

The members of the Sweet Briars Ladies Society Sewing Circle are different as night and day. The things they do have in common are, sewing, gossip and their strong belief in each other. Well, some stronger than others. But they always come around in the end.

Tori, the town librarian, along with her fellow sewing circle members, finds herself wrapped up in one mystery after the other in these three titles. But working together there is nothing they can't do, be it a group sewing project or solving a crime. I just wish I had this group of women around in my life. Luckily, I can spend time with them on the pages!

Each book includes sewing tips (Ms Casey gets some from her readers!) and a sewing pattern of the book's project. NOTE: You do not have to know sewing to enjoy these stories. And fans with book themes won't be disappointed. Plenty of time is spent in the Sweet Briar Library!

I can't wait to get into the fourth in the series to see what the ladies are up to!

Do yourself a favor...read this series!

After dumping her philandering fiance, Tori Sinclair longs for a fresh start somewhere far from Chicago and the painful reminders of her failed relationship. She takes a job as head librarian in a small South Carolina town and makes a determined effort to settle into her new life. The residents of Sweet Briar are polite (if slightly stand offish), but things begin to look up when Tori is invited to join a lively sewing circle. When a local girl is murdered suspicion falls on the person who found the body. Someone who is new to town. Someone with a decidedly Yankee accent...

Suddenly Tori is juggling a new job, a tentative new romance, a group of women who may (or may not) be her friends - and a murder investigation. Will Tori's much hoped for "new beginning" turn out to be nothing but a dead end?

This was quite cute and I enjoyed it despite some of the little hiccups that are pretty common in the first installment of a new series.

Pros: I'm a sucker for "starting over in a small town" storylines, and I found Tori an engaging and relatable protagonist. The author did a good job of giving Sweet Briar a distinct sense of place and the domestic details are neatly sewn (cheesy, but I couldn't resist!) into the storyline. I also enjoyed the romantic element.

Cons: I felt like too many characters were introduced into the storyline all at once, mostly through the sewing circle. It took a while for each of them to develop distinct personalities and honestly I kept getting them confused. I also wasn't fond of Tori becoming the chief suspect just on the basis of her finding the body - I don't know why this is so darned common in cozy mysteries. Not a big fan of the police being portrayed as bumbling, incompetent hicks either. The ending was a touch too saccharin for my taste, with Tori teetering on the brink of becoming a Mary Sue.

Bottom Line: Enjoyable. Definitely a "cozy" mystery with the emphasis on the characters and setting leaving the mystery as window dressing. I'm looking forward to reading the next entry in the series, Death Threads (Southern Sewing Series)
