I hastened after them, with the others following. The sound of a shot lent wings to my heels. Arriving upon the scene, I found Emerson interrogating two of Gurneh’s most notorious citizens. upted his shouted accusations and glared at me. Curse it, Peabody, I told you to go on!. Who fired that shot? And at whom? And why?. Hands on hips, head thrown back, Ramses was staring up at the top of the cliff. There was a third man. Father was about to go after him when I noticed the fellow had a weapon. Good Gad, I exclaimed.

When I was a very young mother, and had all the time in the world for reading and writing, Ms. Peters' books stimulated my intellect and aroused my imagination. I had no college, and through Vicky Bliss and Amelia Peabody I was inspired to learn who John Donne and Howard Carter were, to read Shakespeare and listen to Handel, and to reach for independence.

As usual the book is written with Victorian-ish vocabulary and I'm grateful to be reading on my iPad so that I can touch a word and have a dictionary ready to explain. Wonderful, delightful, page turner.

This series DOES go in order & progresses through the life & adventures of Peabody & Emerson. Do start with Crocodile on the Sandbanks and work your way through the series in the correct order. I expect each book is stand-alone excellent, but it's more fun to read through in order. The series is about a wealthy Victorian lady who decides to travel. She ends up in Egypt & meets an Egyptologist & falls in love & marries him. The rest is one adventure after another. You will learn some Egyptology along the way as well. Great series. Check [...] to get the series in order & learn more. It will make you want to go to Egypt !

Another season, another mystery to solve. This indomitable Family always seems to be in the wrong place at the right time. This 17th book is another episode and well worth reading.

It's 1922. Another season of adventure, discovery and crime- solving for the Emerson family, including Sethos, and their friends. And in this one, Amelia finally hits a target she's shooting at!

Amelia is hilarious. I like her detective work but I have come to identify with her and her family. I just hate that we are all getting old and the kids are leaving. Also that the books will be ending soon.

I'm rereading this series again and I feel like I know these characters so well. I laugh at the antics of some and can't wait to know where they will dig next year. Emerson's the train but Peabody is the engine which means nothing is accomplished without her guidance.

Amelia is her usual delightful self and Nefrit and Ramses only add to the delight.
Another cozy exciting adventure of Amelia, Ramses, Nefret, Emerson,et al. Great escape from the ills, of this century to a time when reason prevailed and exciting things were yet to come!
