It's not often that a book does a lot of world building and has plot lines that do not really go anywhere but that makes the world seem more real.

Silver Lies is the first book in the Silver Rush Mystery series that takes place in Leadville, Colorado in 1979. The silver rush is on. Inez Stannert is the main character. It's not often that a book does a lot of world building and has plot lines that do not really go anywhere but that makes the world seem more real.

Ann Parker’s award-winning Silver Rush mystery series features saloon-owner Inez Stannert in the 1880s silver boomtown of Leadville, Colorado. The series includes SILVER LIES, IRON TIES, LEADEN SKIES, and the upcoming MERCURY’S RISE. Ann’s ancestors include a Leadville blacksmith, a Colorado School of Mines professor, and a gandy dancer. Ann and her family live in the San Francisco Bay Area (although she’d really really love to move to Colorado), where she slings scientific and corporate verbiage by day to pay the bills and writes historical mysteries at night to satisfy her soul.

[Audiobook CD Library Edition in vinyl case.] The crooked, the greedy, and those with a checkered past -- they all came to Leadville with the same purpose: Get in, get rich, get out. As 1879 draws to a close, silver fever burns hot in the Rocky Mountain boomtown of Leadville, Colorado. Unfortunately for Joe Rose, an assayer of precious metals, death stakes its own claim. Joe's body is found trampled into the muck behind Inez Stannert's saloon. Inez already has much more to deal with than pouring shots of Taos Lightning. A lady educated on the East Coast, she has a past that doesn't bear close scrutiny, due in part to her elopement with a gambling man who has recently disappeared. Most of the townsfolk, including Inez's business partner, Abe Jackson, dismiss Joe's death as an accident. Death, after all, is no stranger in Leadville. But Inez wonders why this loving husband and father was carrying a brass token good for ''one free screw'' at the parlor house of Denver madam Mattie Silks. When Joe's widow Emma asks Inez to settle Joe s affairs, Inez reluctantly agrees and soon uncovers skewed assays, bogus greenbacks, and blackmail, leading her to believe that Joe was murdered. Was he killed over money or for purely personal motives? It's up to Inez to find out.

Silver Lies is the first book in the Silver Rush Mystery series that takes place in Leadville, Colorado in 1979. The silver rush is on. Inez Stannert is the main character. She co-owns the Lucky Lady Saloon along with her husband Mark and Abe Jackson. Her husband Mark has disappeared. She does not know if he is alive or dead.

Inez is feisty and strong willed. She can ride, shoot and runs a high stakes gambling game in addition to entering the game. In the prologue, a murder occurs and Inez seems to be the only one who wants to get to the bottom of the murder. She becomes a sleuth and there are more crimes to follow.

The author is very good at slowly revealing the past of the characters. There is good reason most of the characters want that past to stay buried. There are some surprises but if you think about the times, it was probably due for the need of survival. The book was over 400 pages which I thought was a little long. Bat Masterton made an appearance which I thought detracted from the story line. He didn't add to the story for me but took me out of it at times. At this time, there are 6 books in the series.

Inez is co owner of the Silver Queen Saloon. Her husband left her and she's not sure where he is. One of her patrons, and husband of her good friend is found dead behind her establishment. Inez does not trust the Sheriff and decides to find the killer herself and gets into a lot of trouble.

I love stories about Leadville. I've been there many times and enjoy reading about the early days. This was a good story and the author didn't try to get by with just the famous and colorful people that lived there. She made a good story out of unknowns. I'll read the next in the series to see where it goes from here.

It's hard to believe that this book is free--or at least it was on the day I downloaded it to my Kindle. The story is a multi-textured mystery with a strong, well-drawn female protagonist. The writing is smooth and the author has a good feel for how to pace a story of this length. I look forward to reading more work by Ann Parker.

Not long after silver fever descends in Leadville, Colorado, a bustling city begins to emerge. In Leadville and the surrounding environs, land is valued almost as much (if not more) than human life and there is very little that some people wouldn't do to acquire the land they want. The protagonist, Inez, deserted by her husband, must keep their saloon afloat (with the help of their black friend and co-owner) in the fairly lawless (post Civil War) town where everyone, it seems, has a secret they'd rather not have divulged. When the husband of Inez's best friend is found dead just outside Inez's place of establishment, the secrets slowly begin to unravel, and Inez finds it hard to know who to trust.

The novel is as much a mystery as it is a romance, though if I had to choose, I'd label it as a historical thriller with only a hint of romance. Men and women alike will enjoy this fast-paced page turner that is so well plotted it's hard to guess who's behind all the misdeeds. I must admit that Ms. Parker was able to keep me guessing until the very end.

I hope the author will create a sequel; I must know what happens next to Inez.

This well written historical mystery is like a time machine in that it has the power, through its well crafted prose, to transport you back to the "age of silver", a time in our history when silver was king. The author did her homework on this one and it shows in a tale of snow and ice, silver, lies, deception and greed all set against the rugged background of the Colorado Rockies in the boomtown of Leadville, in the winter of 1879-80. From the pistol-packing protagonist, Inez, to the grifters, gamblers, murderers, thieves, whores and hard-working miners looking to blow off a little steam after a grueling 12 hour day, you are there, right in the thick of it. Pianos banging out their tunes, gamblers arguing, streets of muddy, icy filth and the sounds of boots on the boardwalks which (hopefully) keep you above the mess...all ring in your mind as the story plays out in this colorful yet foreboding town.

With its very plausible storyline, excellent character building and through its historical bent, the author takes you on a journey you are not likely to forget. I love a good mystery, and I love Colorado history; and with that being said, I really enjoyed both in this single offering.

See for yourself the harm and heartbreak caused directly and indirectly by lies and deception. This book is not perfect and could use a bit more editing but the story and the setting are impeccable and worth every moment of time you spend reading this excellent tale. I really liked it and I'll gamble that you will too.
