Murder in the Abstract - Susan C. Shea. and reveal a canvas of death that includes Dani herself.

Murder in the Abstract - Susan C. Murder in the Abstract. Published: Jul-2010 (Hardcover).

Author: Shea, Susan C. Publisher: Reputation Books. Condition: New! Binding: Paperback Publish date: 2016. Dani is flying east for what should be an easy and interesting diversion, a short consulting assignment to help a small New England college with a plentiful gift of money and art from an alum. But the donation comes with some strange terms, and she soon learns the donor is a powerful man hiding some alarming secrets.

A posh evening gala is in full swing when tragedy strikes at San Francisco's Devor museum. An acclaimed new artist plunges to his death from an upper office window. As bad luck would have it, it's the office of the museum's chief fundraiser, Dani O'Rourke. Bur before Dani can toss back the rest of her champagne in shock, she's the prime suspect. She and the deceased had a brief affair and the police found a note from her in his pocket, urging him to meet her that night. Dani didn't write any note, but somebody hacked into her computer to make it look as if she did. Who is setting her up for murder? She looks for answers in his paintings, old, new - and, perhaps, fake. Soon a missing abstract and a little black book paint a picture of greed, manipulation and murder...and reveal a canvas of death that includes Dani herself.

Dani O'Rourke, senior executive at the Devor Museum in San Francisco, is taking a quick break from her duties during a party being held for the Museum's wealthy donors and artists. Her break is cut short when she is summoned to the main floor by the head of security. She is told that someone fell from a window on the 5th floor--a window that happens to be in Dani's office. Evidence at the scene points to Dani, and she quickly becomes a person of interest. Worried she might end up in jail and heartsick when she finds out the identity of the victim, Dani begins to investigate this tragic death.

I enjoyed Murder in the Abstract, Book 1 in the Dani O'Rourke Mystery series. This is a well-written mystery that kept me guessing. Each time I was convinced I knew who was responsible for the murder, something would happen that would make me change my mind--and I changed my mind a lot! By the time I was two-thirds of the way through, I decided the two detectives were the only people Dani could trust. Dani is a likeable protagonist, and I'm looking forward to the author adding depth to the characters as this series continues.

Ms. Shea is a new-to-me author. I found out about her second book in this series (The King's Jar) while recently reading a reviewer's blog, so I went searching for the 1st. I'm glad I did.

Her humor and subtle sarcasm added an additional layer of entertainment to this mystery. As the story moved from San Francisco to Santa Fe, I wasn't able to stop turning pages. Susan's knowledge of fundraising in the art world gave authenticity to the storyline. Her ability to weave an intricate plot, satisfied my need for a good whodunnit! Loved it!

I've now read 2 Susan Shea books & enjoyed them both. They are quirky, funny, sometimes suspenseful but not gruesome or grostesque. Good, enjoyable reading!
