Freeman Wills Crofts FRSA (1 June 1879 – 11 April 1957) was an Irish mystery author, best remembered for the character of Inspector Joseph French. A railway engineer by training, Crofts introduced railway themes into many of his stories, which were notable for their intricate planning. Although outshone by Agatha Christie, Raymond Chandler and other more celebrated authors from the golden age of detective fiction, he was highly esteemed by those authors, and many of his books are still in print.

When I set myself to consider the actual beginning of Maxwell Cheyne’s Adventure, I saw at once I should have to go back to Noah

This novel is entirely a work of fiction. The names, characters and incidents portrayed in it are the work of the author’s imagination. When I set myself to consider the actual beginning of Maxwell Cheyne’s Adventure, I saw at once I should have to go back to Noah. Indeed I was not at all sure whether the thing could be adequately explained unless I carried back the narrative to Adam, or even further.

Twenty-nine year old Maxwell Cheyne is enjoying a cocktail in the bar of the Edgecombe Hotel in Plymouth when a stranger approaches him with the unexpected proposal that they collaborate in the writing of short stories. Cheyne has published some fiction already, and the man says he has read it all and was impressed. He himself has some ideas for stories and only wants someone to write them up for him! The two have lunch together in a private dining room, but before the meal is over Maxwell is overcome by drowsiness, and only wakes up six hours later in a hotel bedroom. The hotel manager is standing anxiously over him with the news that he has been drugged. The stranger paid for lunch and slipped away before Maxwell was discovered unconscious by the waiter. Why was he drugged? It's a mystery.

Maxwell lives with his mother and sister in a pleasant Georgian house in Devonshire, their home up until the death of Maxwell's father, a dashing ship captain who never thought to save anything for the future. When Maxwell was nine the house had to be sold, but when he was 20 his mother received an inheritance and was able to buy it back. Now they live there comfortably and Maxwell, home again after naval service in the first World War, is able to indulge his interests in literature and yachting. He has become an expert sailor, an authority on the tides and currents of the Devonshire coast.

For now, however, Maxwell's quiet life is at an end. The drugging incident is only the beginning of an inexplicable reign of terror inflicted on him by unknown enemies. After some daring feats of amateur sleuthing from which he is lucky to emerge alive, he finally realizes, when the young lady who has become his accomplice is kidnapped, that this is a case for the police. He will need the expertise of Inspector French to free him from this nightmare and discover its causes. French, unlike the naïve and gullible Maxwell, is wily and subtle, with a formidable intelligence and a laser-like ability to focus on the problem at hand.

This mystery begins suggestively with a quote from Alice in Wonderland, the White Rabbit on how to tell a story: "Begin at the beginning; go on till you come to the end; then stop." Where does anything begin? That you only know once it's over. This is the 6th of 34 (I think) mysteries by Freeman Wills Crofts, one of my favorite Golden Age writers. If you enjoy a mystery that proceeds rationally and methodically ,from beginning to end, with an outcome that seems inevitable once you know it, but is never obvious before, then Crofts is your man. He also wrote excellent prose, fluent and fluid without showiness or self-consciousness, and knew how to create characters that are not only realistic but sympathetic. Crofts loved to travel and see new places, and he wove various geographical settings into his stories so that each one has its own distinct flavor and ambience. In this one French enjoys a fruitful visit to Antwerp.

Readers who enjoy sampling early vintage “Golden Age” detective fiction are directed to Freeman Wills Crofts. He was master of what is known as the “time-tabling” investigation. If you also like to enjoy again the sort of adventures that appeal to young readers, you will find this one fits the bill. There are kidnappings, gangs of criminals, murder attempts, robberies, ciphers, and a treasure trove at the end of it all. There is plenty of action, on shore and off shore, some continental travel and there is the second appearance of Crofts’ sleuth, Inspector French of Scotland Yard, who takes over and concludes the investigation.
Crofts’ later contributions to the detective fiction genre were of greater interest and aspired higher than this, but the book has a freshness and exuberance that are distinctly endearing.
