This book was the first in the series. I am new to this genre' of writing and have discovered an enjoyment in reading about an action hero. I have completed reading all the Clive Cussler's, NUMA series with Kurt Austin. In that series there was mention of the NUMA series with Dirk Pitt. I decided to start reading the Dirk Pitt series.

Cussler started out with real flair for creating the Dirk Pitt series. Non-stop action, plenty of twists and turns in the mystery part of the plot, great historical inclusions, terrific marine biology and geology as well as early 20th Century seagoing and aeronautical craft information from the big wars of the era, and a good start at building the characters of Pitt and Al Giordino, as well as Gunn and Sandecker. Fun read.

This is one of the early Pitt novels, written in a time before political correctness. The dialog is dated and the treatment of women is right out of Mad Men and the 1960s. Everyone smokes, drinks, and shamelessly chases women. And the women love it. This is a fun read, but don't expect the plot to be complex or the action to be credible. This is an adventure with a clear hero and unambiguous villains. The dialog is almost comical while intended to be serious. Character descriptions are shallow and the story line, while imaginative, is hard to believe. However, I liked the book and I didn't have to bother looking for meaning or messages. This is pure entertainment with a black and white plot, black and white characters and good over evil conclusion.

I am never disappointed by a Clive Cussler novel. If you like adventure tales and escapist fun they are all universally like a balm for your otherwise over-occupied psyche. I have read about 25 of them... about 2/3 of the Dirk Pitts, most of the Kurt Austin's, and all the Fargos. Each is imaginative, cinematic, and beguiling in its own way. Clearly I am a FAN. That being said... it is hard for me to differentiate the books in any of the series from each other. The plots always involve a maniacal despot with unlimited resources, an axe to grind, and an unimaginably complex plot to do something that will cause a calamity our heroes must risk their lives repeatedly to thwart. The good guys always win. The baddies get their comeuppance. The world is changed for the better. And, more often than not, some aspect of previously assumed human history has been rewritten. I began reading the Dirk Pitt books way out of sequence - starting in his later life because I didn't know any better. "Trojan Odyssey" is later in the series, also. I went back and have been trying to read the older books. Lately I am reading them in sequence. I can say the earliest books are different and I think I prefer them to the later ones, like this one, where Dirk's kids are involved. I am glued to Pitt and Giordino and find any portion of the story arc focusing on the kids to be distracting - even when all of these episodes are basic variations on the same 'buddies in danger' scenario. You could easily switch the names from Dirk and Summer to Pitt and Giordino and the scene still works. If you like this type of book you will enjoy this one. But, to be perfectly frank, you will have a hard time remembering what makes this Cussler/Pitt all that different from the others. They are all quite entertaining but a tad formulaic. This will not keep me from reading - and enjoying - them all, however. In fact, I am committed to eventually reading every book of every series - ALL of them. There is a reason why Cussler is one of - if not THE - best-selling author in history.

In looking for a new series to read since finishing the Jack Reacher series, a friend told me about Clive Cussler. I could not get the first of the series on my Kindle so I ordered that and began book two. A good read, well written with many plot twists. I am hoping to enjoy the series as much as the Lee Child books.

You can see how he developed as a writer . His current books are better in their story line. The beginning of a theme is there along with strong character development of his future team . It all leads to a series of great reads.

My boyfriend said this author was great and I would enjoy his books. This book was ok. It was; however, kinda sexist and that wasn't really cool with me. The author (and main character) treated women as dumb and sex objects. I am no feminist, but this book did bother me some when it came to the way he talked about the women characters. Other than that, it was a James Bondy kinda book.

REVIEWER'S OPINION:
I enjoyed the Lee Child books about Jack Reacher, and I thought this author might be similar. Although I've compared Jack to a comic book hero, I find Dirk is much more of a comic book hero than Jack. Dirk is a hero adventurer whose life is often in danger, but he always survives and outwits the bad guys. I've now read two Dirk Pitt books. I'm done. He just doesn't do it for me. I'm not sure why. Jack Reacher fascinates and entertains me but Dirk doesn't. The Dirk stories feel like action-adventure movies, not the kind of depth that I normally get from books. Maybe because the characters and motivations aren't developed enough for me? I'm not sure.

This was a fun mystery. I absolutely love the Dirk Pitt in the books he is smart and tough but portrayed as a mere human with nothing special like in the movies. This book was also written in the seventies and it is very apparent that it is a sign of the times. Everyone smokes and drinks as well as smoking in buildings that hasn't been allowed in years. I thought it flowed well though. I would recommend it but first I would read the pacific vortex.
