Brunelle can't just let the murderer walk, but how can he get a conviction when he has no admissible evidence and the killer is protected by the PRESUMPTION OF INNOCENCE?

In this series of which this book is the first, Stephen Penner has created David Brunelle – a successful attorney who works for the Prosecutor’s Office in Seattle, Washington. (I was initially drawn to this book, as well as legal thrillers in general, because I worked for over three decades in various law firms.) In this story, Brunelle is faced with one of the most difficult cases of his career. A young girl has been brutally murdered. However, the only evidence Brunelle has against the accused murderer is his accomplice, another young girl who he had also victimized. She, of course, is scared to death of the killer and as a result refuses to testify against him. Because she is an accomplice who could also be charged with the murder, Brunelle tries to get her to take a plea deal in exchange for her testimony against the killer. However, she chooses to assert her right to remain silent in order to protect herself. The conundrum of the story is how Brunelle will be able to get a conviction when all he has to offer a jury is circumstantial evidence. I was not particularly impressed with the plot line of this book because I felt it was a little thin and contrived. However, even though that’s how I felt initially, I like to read more than one book in any series before making up my mind about how I feel about the series as a whole. Therefore, after reading this first book in the Brunelle series, I’ve gone on and read the next three and I can honestly say that my opinion has changed. I now feel that the later books have more complex plots, with a few twists I wouldn’t have expected. In addition, Penner’s character, David Brunelle the prosecuting attorney, has grown on me as I’ve learned more about him. As a result, I may not have originally recommended this first book, but I now definitely recommend the series.

Penner is at least on par with Grisham regarding accuracy) of the rules of evidence in a criminal trial and trial procedure. Penner comes out ahead, in my opinion, in that he doesn't misstate legal rules for dramatic effect the way Grisham sometimes does.

The writing is tight, the pace is consistent. I would like to have seen a little more character development. The female characters were defined chiefly by their body type and style of clothing.

The male lead character is a senior assistant district district attorney tasked with the prosecution of a guilty murder defendant with no physical evidence and his only witness is a juvenile co-defendant. The rules protecting a defendant from being forced to give testimony against one's interest would prevent that co-defendant/witness from giving evidence, whether they are tried together or seperately. This is further complicated by the juvenile issue. Penner does an excellent job of describing the legal issues that confront his hero.

In classic form, the day is saved by a surprise witness that the hero is able to put up because um...er...THE name was on the witness list given to the defense, but neither side expected this person to be called!

But that is not the heart-stopping conclusion that I won't reveal.

Overall, it is a great read. The legal issues are accurately presented. My minor caveates aside, I still recommend the book highly and look forward to other titles from Mr. Penner.

This book moves fast. I read it in a few hours. It is a very procedural legal thriller, meaning most of it takes place inside the courtroom. It is about the strategies used at trial by the prosecuted and defence attorneys. It really highlights the adversarial legal system and never fails to make the field motions and judges rulings entertaining. It is the better of the two books I've read by this author. Fans of the courtroom drama will find a lot to like in this book.

Excellent case, great intro to law for the reader, and some really good LOL one liners. I was intrigued from the onset and was off to the races with each page turned. Great cast of characters and a good paced book. So happy to have a new author I enjoyed with more books to read. I look forward to seeing what other crazy courtroom antics Mr. Brunelle can get into, as I imagine the possibilities are endless.

I liked the book. Most of the facts are made available within a few pages of starting the book. Then the court battle starts and the suspense builds up. Except the climax which almost became an anticlimax for me. I was expecting the culmination of the story at the court itself. But there is something else which prevented me from giving the book a 5 star rating. However, that brings a spoiler. An accused is granted a bail but he still stays in the jail. When the presentation of the witnesses are all over and the arguments are complete and it appears as if the accused will walk away free, he comes out with the bail .. !

I've read many books about lawyers and courtroom scenes. I tried to like this one, but for someone who purports to be an attorney himself, I think he should focus on tightening up some critical areas inside and out of the courtroom to be at least a little more believable. I found most of the characters to be more silly than legitimate. The medical examiner is unprofessional and her daughter a loose cannon. The prosecutor is a womanizer and a jerk. The Judge? The Murderer and his Vampire Gang? The slutty Bartender? The Defense attorney? Ten million dollars bail??? How did he post that? Add to that many grammatical errors and typos and in my opinion this author has a lot of work to do to become a serious writer.

Interesting plot with obligatory twists, complicated characters , and legal issues all combine to make for an excellent read. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series. I think you will also.
