Doc Ford - 16 ). Sanibel island, florida. On a moonless winter night, after working late in the lab, Marion Ford anchored his boat and swam to a yacht owned by a killer. Ford wore swim fins, a black wool cap and cargo pants. His glasses were around his neck on fishing line, as usual. He had a tactical light in one pocket, a broken wristwatch in another. Aboard the forty-three-foot Viking was a man named Bern Heller

Imagine the worst that can happen. This is book in Randy Wayne White's Doc Ford series.

Imagine the worst that can happen. Then imagine again  . I happened to pick up this copy at "Doc Ford's Rum Bar and Grill" on Sanibel Island, which is the setting of most of the stories. We've been vacationing here for about 12 years and have read all of the Doc Ford books up until the last 4. Some are better than others, but all are fun. In this story, a Minnesota teen is kidnapped as Doc Ford watches.

When his U.S. senator girlfriend is kidnapped during an assassination attempt outside the Explorers Club in New York City, Doc Ford sets out on a rescue mission in the Florida Keys with his friend Tomlinson; an effort that is further complicated by the kidnapper's claims that the senator has been buried alive.

Swapping Dinkins’ live aboards for the Hampton’s Bonesmen and their servants, bad idea. Tomlinson goes to a barber, sheds sarong for a suit, bad idea. Doc “services” a frantic, manipulative U.S. Senator in her NYC hotel suite instead of jogging with, cooking for, and being drawn in by an accomplished lithe coastal beauty, bad idea. Castro’s billions harvested from Spanish shipwrecks, great idea ;but, it got lost in the Hamptons. This book is an outlier that disappoints with tiresome rambling phone calls, too many government agencies, subplots, goose chasing, and zero laidback allure.

I’ve been slowly working my way through the Doc Ford series and I’d say this one, #16, is one of the best so far. White’s characters, always good, are getting better. And I especially liked the change of venue to a wintery NYC & rural Long Island. White does a good job of making Florida appealing but, after 15 novels, 95% on Florida’s Gulf Coast, a change of pace was nice!

I bought my husband a couple of Randy Wayne White novels because we were going on a mini vacation to Sanibel Island, FL and had plans to eat at Doc Fords while there. He didn't read them before the trip because he was in the middle of another large book. But upon his return, he read the 1st 2 I got him at lightning speed, and then went out of town. When he returned, he found a stack of ten or so, and proceeded to go through them rather quickly too. Then he went out of ton again so I got him another stack. He has slowed a little bit, but still glued to them. He says their is a little bit of repetitive set-up in each one because it has returning characters, and this is to be expected in serial novels. Over all though, the more he reads, the more he seems to be enjoying them. I don't guess it really matters which one you start with and which order you go in. Anyway, he loves fishing and the water, so I figured these would be his cup of tea. A few years back I got him Linda Greenlaw's books and he love those so much, he reread them several times. She writes a different kind of novel, but the fishing and sea thread is there and tha's all it takes to get him "hooked".

I have read almost all of the Doc Ford books, in fact I am working my way from the first book. They have deteriorated as I have progressed. This one was terrible. No Dinkins Bay, little Thomplinson and very little from the characters at the marina.

I have about 100 pages to go and have decided to stop the agony and have put the book aside. I thought maybe it was just the mood I was in, but then read the reviews and saw how many other readers felt the same way.

I will read the next book and hope the old Foc Ford is back, but I will not waste anymore time on this one.

Very disappointing!

Since I read all the Doc Ford books I can find it's fair for me to say that this one might be the best yet.

I've read almost all of the Doc series and I had skipped these few in the middle because I was listening to others "opinions". Turns out, I should have just read the books instead of the opinions because I really enjoyed this.

No, it's not the typical Doc sitting at the stilt house in Florida. So if that's all you want, then this isn't for you.

I enjoyed this one because it was a nice change up. And it was a fun read that kept me going. It's nice to get out of Florida (tropics in general) once and a while.

I love his books! If I see a new book by White, I read it. Doc Ford feels like an old friend. Set in Florida, usually with some humor mixed in and a catchy plot, White's novels take you right into the tropics, and my favorite time to read them is during a snow storm outside my Michigan home. If you like mysteries, get it.
I love Doc Ford fiction adventures! There is enough factual Florida geography to
lend authenticity to the Doc Ford series which make the story lines plausable. Easy reading,
great descriptions of villians, Doc's clever problem solving all make for good
reading entertainment for anyone who loves mystery thrillers.
