Jacob meets many other peculiar children, including Milliard, who has the power of invisibility and Bronwyn, who has superior strength. During his stay, Jacob is told of stories of mysterious deaths in the area, which he then alerted the Peculiar children. Apparently, these deaths are caused by hollowgasts or hollows, the same thing that killed Jacob’s grandfather. He soon realizes he is the only person that can see the monsters, and inherently only he can stop their killing.
