An X-Men fan and a hopeless romantic, Heather wanted to someday tell a story of extraordinary young people and the struggles that accompany saving the world. AMAZING! I simply love the world Heather Burch has created in her Halflings series! Nikki Youngblood is my favorite young heroine to date. I read this book in two sittings- half the book the first night, the final half the second night. It's that good. I found myself laughing, crying, sighing, cheering, and rooting on the characters through all the accidents, incidents, and action (and there is lots of action). I love the relationships and tensions between not only the mc Nikki and the Halflings, but also the dynamics between the Halfling brothers. You can't help but love these characters. Heather Burch writes with the perfect combination of passion, description, and plot that causes the story to come alive and play out like a great movie in your mind! (In the Kindle version: I am also very happy to report that I found very few typos/editing errors! My ocd really hates it when a slew of typos pulls me out of a good story.) This book is a must if you have a daughter who enjoys to read! Nikki is a character that will make your daughter stand a little taller and realize there is more to life than being a damsel in distress waiting for a prince to save her. She's one protagonist you won't easily forget and you sure won't forget the Lost Boys-- Mace, Raven, and Vine anytime soon either! This is the kind of book it's easy to get lost in... time will fly by and the end will come much too soon! I cannot wait to dive into the next two books in this fantastic series.

Imagine if you will: Three half human, half angel males, all young, fit, blonde, blue eyed, smoking hot, with endearing personalities, and their current mission? You. (Please feel free to fan yourself.)

Nikki Youngblood is just a normal high school teen, who lives mostly under the radar with her loose jeans, vintage tshirts, and artsy laid back lifestyle. But all that is about to change in the form of gigantic, slobbering Hell Hounds bent on making her into a nice little human size snack. Nikki doesn't stand a chance, but luckily for her she has three protectors who've got her back: Mace, the sweet, kinda shy, knight in shining armor halfling, Vine the uber innocent, candy loving, surprised-the-heck-out-me-warrior, and finally....the halfling who turned me into a bowl of girl crazed mush...Raven. He's got the wings, but that might be the only thing angelic about him besides his stunning looks. These three halflings are on a special mission from the Throne, but unfortunately for them their "keeper" is the only one who can actually hear from heaven, and it's up to them to figure out who actually needs the saving...besides the girl being chased by supernatural beast that is. Nikki literally hands her hands full, because when these young angelic males enter her life, it all seemingly turned to utter anarchy. Her parents are keeping things from her, she finds herself on the receiving end of a push/pull kinda romance between Mace and Raven, a mysterious guest shows up that leaves her unsettled, all manner of supernatural things are stalking her, and the clues they find seem to provide more questions than answers. But one thing is for sure...someone wants Nikki, and her protectors will stop at nothing to keep her safe.

Halflings definitely had me ensnared...I mean, three hot guys, two who are vying for the attention of a kick-butt girl who has more gumption than sense at times? Plus add in the fact that these said guys actually can't be in a relationship with a human due to the whole fallen angel-rebellion-taboo thing, and you have an instant hit! I will admit there was a-whole-lotta background into God, angels, Lucifer, fallen angels, and the Bible, which I didn't mind in the least, and, think about it, you can't have fallen angels without God, but the story itself was truly awesome!!! The only thing that did get on my nerves is the whole bromance feel to the guys sometimes. Like when two of them are about to get in a jealous fight, and they end up hugging. Still...it had a good plot, even if some things were obvious to the readers while the characters still hobbled along, and the heroine was spunky just how I like them! I can't wait to see what happens next, and believe me when I say you will want to read this just for Raven alone! Girl mush. That's all I'm saying.

Some strange things are happening to Nikki Youngblood. She's been chased by ugly dogs and followed by some really cute guys. And she's not sure why. The next thing she knows, all three guys enroll in her school and are in all her classes! How weird is that? But the more she learns about Mace, Raven, and Vine, the more she learns about why those weird things were happening to her. One thing is certain: life will never be the same!

Whoo! Now this was a fun read--and a quick one too. (I love quick reads.) Heather Burch has crafted an intriguing storyworld with her Halflings (half angel/half humans) and their history.

One thing... The premise of angels having mated with humans bothers me. While there are some who interpret the passage in Genesis 6:4 to mean that demons mated with human women, I find that disturbing and suggest a deeper study of Genesis 6:4. (I highly recommend Randy Alcorn's article on the subject.) I realize, however, that not everyone holds my view of this subject and that this is a fictional story. But if that kind of subject matter bothers you, this story might.

That being said, I was drawn into the story from page one and couldn't wait to see how this story would turn out. Luckily I knew in advance what I was in for. This is the first book in a trilogy. So I knew there would be a bit of a cliffhanger headed my way as to the overall mystery. No matter. It was still a fun, romantic read. I have no guesses as to which angel boy Nikki might choose--or if she even will! But I look forward to reading the next two books. I hope it won't be too long of a wait because I am hooked on Halfings!
