Good book, found good info, great reference guide and a good book to have in any historians collection. I felt like the subtitle of this book should have been its main title: Migration and Violence in Early America. One person found this helpful. The author's insistence that the work was about the Shawnees felt like something personal and not reflective of the scholarship he actually had to work with. I would venture to say that the book mentions the Iroquois (who, afterall, had most of the areas described under their control) more often than the purported subjects of the book.

The book uses data simply documenting declining violence across time and geography. This paints a picture of massive declines in violence of all forms, from war, to improved treatment of children

Why are African-Americans more violent than Americans of European descent? . That’s very much a cause of the phenomenon. Even in America, the most truculent modern democracy, voters no longer tolerate massive casualties.

Why are African-Americans more violent than Americans of European descent? Courtwright takes on these puzzles in a rich narrative which weaves American history with evolutionary psychology and neurobiology. He argues that large parts of America were settled by young men living in anarchy. How else do you explain why the world is becoming more peaceful? One part of the explanation is that Hobbes got it mostly right.

An excerpt from my book Stephen Fry in America Stephen Fry in America on BBC 1 from Sunday 12th October @ . 0pm. I was ten when my mother made me a present of this momentous information. Steve was confident almost to the point of rudeness, unlike Stephen who veered unconvincingly between shyness and showing off. If I am honest I have to confess that Stephen was slightly afraid of Steve. I often drive around in a London taxi. The traditional black cab is good and roomy for filming in and perhaps the sight of one braving the canyons, deserts and interstate highways of America could become a happy signature image for the whole journey.
