The Twilight Gods ebook

The Twilight Gods book. I’ve read a number of Hayden Thorne’s young adult books over the past few years; they tend to be thought-provoking and The Twilight Gods is no exception. This is an odd little book, to be sure.

The Twilight Gods book. I went into this expecting a straightforward historical ghost story (and goodness knows I’ve mentioned often enough how much I’ve always enjoyed ghost stories).

Stephenie Meyer changed the cliché of a parasitic vampire into a wonderful god-like animal with her Twilight book. In Twilight, a normal secondary school young lady, Bella Swan, begins to look all st.rry eyed at a standout amongst the most wonderful young men at her new school, Edward, who happens to be a vampire. What does one call a dazzling, secretive vampire and his shocking, baffling vampire crew? "The Cullens" would suffice. The writer's style and characters will stick your hands to the book and your eyes to the page.

The Twilight Gods by Hayden Thorne – This year was the year I got to reading Hayden Thorne. So far I’ve read two very solid books (this one being perhaps more so, though that’s just my opinion) by Hayden, and I really enjoyed this one. You rarely see gay historical fiction, and Hayden has a way of writing the important bits. The stories read like a gay fairy tale, almost, and they deserve a wider audience. Jumpstart the World by Catherine Ryan Hyde – I really enjoyed her earlier LGBTQ work, Becoming Chloe, and I was very happy to see that this was even better.

London during the Great Exhibition of 1851 is a new world of technological advances, eye-popping inventions, and glimpses of exotic treasures from the East. For fifteen-year-old Norris Woodhead it's a time of spectral figures mingling with London's daily crowds, and an old rectory in a far corner of the English countryside, a great house literally caught in time, where answers to curious little mysteries await him. Confined by his family's financial woes, Norris suffers a lonely and unsatisfying time till the day he (and only he) notices "shadow-folks" in the streets. Then a strange widow appears, rents a vacant room in the house, and takes him under her wing. She becomes his guardian, slowly revealing those shadows' secrets, Norris' connection with them, and the life-altering choices he has to face in the end. The Twilight Gods is a retelling of Native American folktale called "The Girl Who Married a Ghost." Set in Victorian England, it's an alternative perspective on a gay teen's coming-out process, with Norris' journey of self-discovery couched in magical and supernatural terms and imagery.

I've read a number of Hayden Thorne's young adult books over the past few years; they tend to be thought-provoking and "The Twilight Gods" is no exception.

This is an odd little book, to be sure. I went into this expecting a straightforward historical ghost story (and goodness knows I've mentioned often enough how much I've always enjoyed ghost stories). I was intrigued by the idea of the shadow figures walking the streets of London, which Norris happened to notice quite by chance while gazing out the window one afternoon. They were very vague and indistinct at first, hardly a whisper on the wind, but as day by day they became more corporeal, it was fun to try and figure out, with Norris, just what was going on.

When the mysterious widow starts boarding at his house, however, the atmosphere of the story became ever more peculiar and dreamlike. With the addition of the mysterious country estate that seems to exist outside of time, I was getting a bit confused---simply because the book was turning out to be something quite different than I had originally expected. But finally, about half-way through, a ray of light pierced the dark cobwebby recesses of my brain, and it occurred to me----ah, I see, quite apart from this being a fantasy, this story is filled with metaphors....

It's a delicate, haunting sort of tale, and I think the images and impressions it left are going to linger in my imagination for a while. Recommended.

The book has a lovely cover, with my only complaint being the image of Norris appears to be MUCH younger than is his character in the text.

This is a second book I have read by this writer and while I am not a target audience for her works, I really loved both of them. When I read this book I wanted to stop every few sentences and reread them out loud, seriously, so beatifully she writes. It is a coming of age story indeed, but it is placed in the supernatural settings of the sorts. It was beatifully spooky at times and I usually do not do spooky, but it was also touching, funny, main character is extremely likeable. OMG I loved the book. The only minor problem I had is that symbolism was a bit heavy for me at times, but it was so beatifully done that I could easily overlook it.

And I am sure for teens symbolism is just strong enough.

ETA:

How can I forget the cover? Such a beatiful cover, I wish more books in this genre and subgenres have had covers like that.

Set in the mid-1800s, England, The Twilight Gods, shows us a fourteen-year-old boy going through growing pains that any modern teen can relate to. But, as Norris approaches his fifteenth birthday, he is changing in more ways than meet the eye: Norris sees shadows walking around with everyday people through the streets of London. His eccentric mother, distant father, condescending older brother and two eager-to-be-wed sisters know nothing of the youngest member of the household's extraordinary new sight.

A trip with his tutor to the Great Exhibition, and a new tenant for his family, leave Norris's life changed forever. Yet while his understanding of the shadow world grows, so do the difficulties he faces as he struggles to understand, and make some very tough choices.

The characters are expertly drawn by Thorne, with actions and dialogue that are both compelling and often hilarious. An engaging story blended with sharp wit and a surprising amount of humor make this short novel a wonderful page-turner.

Highly recommended for the younger to mid YA range. As well as for adults who enjoy a fun, supernatural history read! (Note that Amazon has The Twilight Gods listed under juvenile fiction, but this must be a mistake. The publisher is exclusively young adult and the book is also YA.)

This is the first book of Thorne's I've read, but it will certainly not be the last! Really fantastic read!

London was a beautiful place in 1851. It attracted people
near and far to see the Great Exhibition full of new
inventions, and exotic treasures. Fifteen-year-old Norris
discovered mysterious shadow folk among the crowds of
people. His life was starting to bore him until a strange
widow became a renter of one of his parents' vacant rooms.
She slowly revealed the secrets of the shadow folk, and
his connection to them. In the end, he is faced with a
life-changing decision.

The characters were wonderfully
drawn by Hayden Thorne. Her writing was very impressive,
and she makes this story very captivating. The Twilight
God's was a real page turner in the end. The story's
characters were so real, I feel like I actually met the
family. I recommend this book to YA readers who like a
fun, supernatural history read.

NOTE to parents: This is a gay romance with gay boys.
