I bought this book hoping it would cover all aspects of my preparation for the verbal review of the GMAT. The content is good and overall I'm satisfied with what you get for what you pay. Here are some pros and cons:

PROS
- The concepts and knowledge you need for the test are well covered. Other guides only focus on the strategies.
- For each verbal section, the book clearly explains where most test-takers fail and why (which I found very useful)
- Good structure. It first covers "what" you need and then "how" to apply it. Other guides mix content with strategies, making it confusing.

CONS
- Content can sometimes be too obvious
- Strategies are better covered in other guides
- The format of the Kindle version of this book is horrible. If you are planning to buy this book, I would suggest a printed copy.

Conclusion: buy it if you are just starting, since it would give you a good general base. If you already know English grammar, rules and concepts, and want to focus solely on strategies to improve your efficiency, then go for another guide (Kaplan is a good choice).

Douglas Pierce wrote a wonderful workbook for potential business school candidates called 'Conquering GMAT Verbal & Writing.' Students can increase their test scores on the verbal section by following three steps: 1) Learn the content, 2) Stnadardize your approach, and 3) Understand the Test.

There are seventy-five minutes to complete the 41 verbal questions on the exam, so pacing and time management are important components of taking a successful test. Such strategies are particularly important when you run across difficult reading comprehension passages, or a difficult Critical Reasoning question.

One strategy is to complete Sentence Correction questions in under a minute, but even here, you can get some very long sentences to analyze. GMAT can lay some elegant time traps for the unsuspecting test-taker - and a book such as this one can help you navigate through them.

It does pay to review grammar before practicing sentence correction questions. The thirty page review of the Grammar Basics is adequate, though I really would recommend Kaplan's `GMAT Verbal Foundations' as your primary source in this regard. Use this book after studying grammar concepts to perfect your Sentence Correction skills.

Reading Comprehension Questions requires you to read passages critically before answering 3-4 detailed questions concerning the passage. What seems like an easy task can be compounded by the complexity of the passage. This was a skill that I found required constant attention, because it is so easy to become glazed over by some of the passages that the GMAT can throw at you.

Critical Reasoning Questions become complicated because it is not easy to pick out the Conclusion, Premises, and Assumptions of an argument. Assumptions are particularly difficult because they are unstated by the author. It seemed to me that different GMAT preparation books made different assumptions on relatively similar problems.

All of the three Verbal question types require practice to improve your performance, and this 300-page workbook by McGraw-Hill is a useful study companion for those reasons.

The changes to the GMAT on June 6, 2012, will have some effect on this book. Since the Analysis of an Issue prompt will be replaced with Integrated Reasoning questions, it will not be necessary to practice the former types of questions. The 41-question Verbal section of the Exam will still contain the three types of questions analyzed here (SC, RC, and CR). Even with the change to the test, I would still recommend this book as it does give you immense help for the Verbal section of the exam.

This is a great book if you want to increase your verbal score on the GMAT. I am not sure why this book is not as popular as some of the other books but it sure has some good content. Although AWA is not considered to be an important part of the score, it should not be neglected as most top business schools do look at the AWA scores. This book will surely help you write well organized essays. Other verbal sections are also nicely covered in this book. Highly recommended!

Although most of GMAT Readers focus on Test Prep, such as Princeton Reviewm and Kaplan, and never pays attention to McGraw Hill, I can ensure that this book gives you some perspectives about verbal, especially Reading Comp Strategy which I am weak at. They have some good examples with good explanation which you can not find from other test prep. This book might not be the single book used but you can use together with other Test Prep to improve your score.
