In 1952 Per-Ingvar Brånemark used a titanium implant chamber to study blood flow .
In the 1970s Professor Per-Ingvar Branemark and his colleagues at the University of Gothenburg produced clinical evidence of a long-awaited breakthrough in prosthodontics - artificial tooth root analogs for edentulous jaws. Furthermore, their research showed the predictable, long-lasting response of osseointegration.Recently, the research and clinical applications of osseointegration have grown to include single tooth replacement and over-dentures. Research and Interest have also expanded into the new and exciting areas of extraoral application and orthopedics. This book has gathered together international leaders in osseointegration who give updates on their research into the Branemark Implant. The experiences of the Mayo Clinic and of Japanese, Italian, and Swedish teams are detailed. Other areas given special emphasis are soft tissue response, biologic perspectives, and the impact of osseointegration on oral rehabilitation.
