My review is based on the Kindle version.
I am an electronics hobbyist, I hold a Bachelors of Science in Electronics Engineering Technology, but my real job is in commercial aviation so while that is technical- it doesn't always fulfill my hands-on tinkering needs if you can understand. It's been a lot of years now since I graduated from college and while I know a lot about electronics, I've also forgotten a lot of the basics. I found this book to be an excellent refresher, and even learned a few new things! It explains such complex subjects in short order with enough information that I believe it is worth 5 stars. If only my professors had used such simple terms. It is readable, enjoyable, and one thing that stands out is the authors ability to put things in terms of simplicity that still are accurate and don't leave out the importance of what not to do.
I would recommend also Forrest Mims Engineer's Notebook, and his collection of Engineer's Mini-Notebooks. These are a collection of basic to mid-level circuits drawn out with some good explanation of how and why they work. I read all these Forrest Mims selections before attending engineering school back in 1987. I still have them... I checked here on Amazon and you can still get them too. Most are cheap, a couple of bucks, and you get a great companion to this book I am reviewing.

I just recently got an Arduino Uno R3...and wanted something to peek my idea generator and this book worked for me. You don't have to have a degree, just have to know how to read, have interest in the subject and the book will do the rest. Their explanation of how a transistor works alone is worth the price of the book. If you have a kid interested in electrical engineering- get them a book like this at a young age. It helps a lot.

Fun Book.

This book was written more for adults who know what they are doing. I would not recommend it for kids.

This is the kind of book that, if it falls into the hands of an inquisitive youngster (or even an oldster) it might change the course of their life completely...in a good way. I suppose it could conceivably send someone off down the wrong path as well, but that's not what I was thinking of a moment ago when I started writing. I was thinking about those times--those discoveries and aha! moments in my life--where everything just clicked and was all cool and interesting enough to make me invest myself in it completely and never look back. Those moments have been very few and far between, but this book might well have been the occasion of one of them if it had existed (and I had run across it) at just the right time. Because there's some genuinely cool stuff in it to build, and the directions on how to do that couldn't, for the most part, be much clearer or complete--even for the greenest beginner. I'll have to defer to others about parts lists and photographic accuracy and so on because I haven't actually built any of the gadgets yet, but in my read-throughs I have tried to imagine myself following the instructions as I go and I've encountered nothing so far that has set off huge warning bells or anything. In my opinion, this is a great book for hobbyists, spy fans, and would be designers/hackers of electronicky-type stuff...

I'm a HUGE Fan of the series and author. From novices to lifetime electronic hobbiest these books have you covered!
Great book! I give it five stars! Fun projects you can build cheaply using stuff you find in thrift stores or for free if you are willing to look inside Salvation Army dumpsters! Projects are great if you are a private eye, company internal security guy, or a kid who wants to really bother your family, friends and neighbors! On the more serious side,if you are into nature, you could probably use alot of the night scope and amplified ear stuff for bird/ animal monitoring. Be rational using this stuff! You could get in trouble if you follow your evil genius side! But...that's why you are looking at this book isn't it...MAH!, HA!, HA!, and HA!
