Thermocatalytic upgrading of heavy crude oil at reservoir temperature and pressure has been studied. The processing of heavy oil feedstocks (HOF) requires the development of new effective techniques that will lead to an increase in the yield of light fractions, suppression of coke formation, and saturation of liquid products with hydrogen.
The Canadian petroleum industry developed in parallel with that of the United States. The first oil well in Canada was dug by hand (rather than drilled) in 1858 by James Miller Williams near his asphalt plant at Oil Springs, Ontario.
