An Apollo Technicians Journey Through American HistoryDavid L. Cisco looked at the lunar module, with its paper-thin walls and countless switches and dials, and had a moment of doubt. Could this thing really take people to the moon? In 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin answered that question.

With the phone propped against his shoulder, sitting on the edge of the bed, Bernhardt was unlacing his shoes as he talked. I said I wanted to think about it-wanted to talk to you.

With the phone propped against his shoulder, sitting on the edge of the bed, Bernhardt was unlacing his shoes as he talked hat time, he was fading. James-his head bodyguard, apparently-gave him another pill and loaded him back into his limo. DuBois had revived a little, and we talked for another fifteen minutes. He gave me a phone number. I have to call him by ten o’clock tonight. Bernhardt glanced at his watch. The time was seven-thirty; they’d been talking for more than an hour.

An Apollo Technician s Journey Through American History
David L. Cisco looked at the lunar module, with its paper-thin walls and countless switches and dials, and had a moment of doubt. Could this thing really take people to the moon?
In 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin answered that question. But the astronauts had help; an unsung, 400,000-member workforce made the Apollo program and America s race to the final frontier a reality.
As a thirteen-year-old junkyard forklift operator, Cisco never dreamt of being a part of American history. With the chaos of the 1960s swirling around him, this biracial young man decided to give up life in New York for a future as an Apollo technician in Houston.
Moving into the corporate world, Cisco hired some of the first female and African-American airline pilots in the United States. He and his wife later launched a successful travel agency. Along the way, he was elected to public office and worked tirelessly for charity and his community, earning the kid from the junkyard a trip to the White House.

This book chronicles a mans life from poverty to wealth. Told by many to aspire to work as a hardware store clerk, he ends up wealthy. The American dream. Hard work, courage and determination equals success.

The author was our guide during my recent visit to the NASA Space Center at Houston. I bought the book thinking it was going to describe in more detail the author's contribution on the space program. I must say I was a bit disappointed because that is really a small section of the book; most of the book is an interesting description of the author's social and economic ascent in the US, against all odds, since he came from a very poor and disadvantaged family.

Nevertheless, it is an interesting story, where the author praises the greatness and uniqueness of his country, where good luck, being smart, hard work, and freedom can let an individual succeed economically and professionally, even if he or she starts from the very bottom.

Biased from the author's own recommendation during his NASA Level 9 tour, and the book's cover, I was hoping for more inside stories about the author's involvement with the space program. It turned out to be more of an inspiring biography of beating the odds, achieving success and happiness, being greatful [sic] and giving back.

"It's important that people know about some of the 400,000 people who contributed to the lunar landing," says David L. Cisco, author of Full Circle, a memoir about his life growing up biracial in New York and his extraordinary journey to Houston and the Apollo program.

Mr. Cisco's experiences at NASA were just one part of his multifaceted journey through America's most tumultuous decades. He started working in a junkyard at thirteen and later attended night school to complete a degree. His disadvantaged youth might have kept a lesser man from finding his way into the prestigious world of astronauts and engineers.

Following his first stint at NASA, David moved into the corporate world and hired some of the first female and African-American airline pilots in the United States. He later launched a successful travel agency, was also elected to public office and worked tirelessly for charity, earning a trip to the White House in the process.

This is a really good motivational story. It's more about how a guy can succeed through hard work than about NASA.
