Exploring the Urban Community. Richard Greene, James Pick.

Authored by accomplished urban geographers and GIS experts, Exploring the Urban Community: A GIS Approach leverages the modern geographer’s toolset, employing the latest GIS methodology to the study of urban geography. The Second Edition expands upon this timely, applied approach by incorporating new “internet GIS” Google Earth™ activities, which do not require students to own expensive software or travel to a school lab. New exercises are also provided for ArcGIS 9.3 and 10, the latest version of the industry-dominant software. Coupled with current examples and applications from around the world, including a greater focus on India and China, Exploring the Urban Community presents an engaging and uniquely hands-on applied approach to the study of urban geography.

Kind of pedantic, I had to get out my dictionary to find out what the authors were talking about, definitely an upper level or "grad" text book, but that's not what we're using it for. We're using it for a Junior College level GIS class because the exercises incorporate many aspects of GIS analysis that we will probably come across "on the job." The exercises are clear, and the intended results are illustrated in the book so we know if we've arrived at the same results when we're done with the exercise as the authors' had. With some judicious editing, this would make a dynamite Esri text for anyone interested in Urban ANalysis using GIS.

I am disappointed with the Kindle version of this book because it does not come with access codes to retrieve the data needed to complete the exercises. I bought this for an online GIS course I am taking and I thought the Kindle version would come in handy because I work full time and I have a two hour commute to/from work to home. It's a lot easier to keep the electronic version on my tablet instead of lugging an extra book around. I now have to have the instructor send me the data files electronically for each assignment instead of being able to load them on my computer all at once. This is a major pain that could've been avoided if it was explicitly noted somewhere that no data came with the e-version.

I like how the book explored Urban Issues and also how it had the ArcMap exercises at the end of each chapter.

The book was very informative and offered many solutions to why certain urban issues occur.

Even more relevant, were the ArcMap exercises. The ArcMap exercises significantly helped in my ability to use ArcMap. This is crucial because I am a geography student and going through the exercises educated me more about real world topics while using ArcGIS.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested with Urban Issues and want to learn more about GIS.

This is book was very informative, well written, and much more useful than all the other books that I have read that pertain to Urban Issues/GIS.

Bought this book for my nephew who needed it for his masters degree college courses.
He said it was perfect and what he needed to complete his course.
This book is excellent.
