As far as the rapturous opening night audience was concerned, not much. This stylisation creates a disconnect that exposes the emotional holes in the story. It was a hit before it even opened, with the entire season sold out. The production is an artfully conceived and skilfully manifested adaptation, which remains, as playwright Simon Stephens himself says, loyal to the book. This means that narrative and dialogue have been imported wholesale and given theatrical dress-ups. While the crude characterisations work fine for the minor characters, such as headmistress Mrs Gascoyne (Amanda Posener), it creates a dilemma with the major characters around Christopher.

Its title refers to an observation by the fictional detective Sherlock Holmes in Arthur Conan Doyle's 1892 short story "The Adventure of Silver Blaze". Haddon and The Curious Incident won the Whitbread Book Awards for Best Novel and Book of the Year, the Commonwealth Writers' Prize for Best First Book, and the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize.

This is certainly a curious incident, finding this dog here in the night-time, wouldn't you say? But wait, that's just the first paragraph. Next, the narrator leans down beside the dog, and finds that it's still warm. We won't bother summarizing the book here (though we highly recommend you read it yourself!), since Christopher is mostly telling us about it to explain the difference between clues and red herrings (which are like fake clues).
