I happened upon the first edition and was soon engrossed, especially the history of cellular technology. I had to get the latest version to become current in the knowledge. An excellent tutorial, but you must be a bit of a techie to get through the science and acronyms. Very well written, hard to put down.

There is a lot of very good information on wireless technologies from analog through 4g, from cell phone through to the mobile switching center. I used this reference to prepare for a job interview and it paid off extensively. I gave 4 instead of 5 stars based on some editing issues and SONET description errors. The editing issues more or less are related to what appears to be 3rd edition updates added on top of, rather than in place of previous editions making for awkwardly repeated sections. Additionally, the description of SONET is incorrect in its definition and info about switching mechanisms.

Those issues aside, the reference is great for what it is meant for, which is crash course in wireless technologies. I highly recommend this book for this reason.

One last thing, I have no idea what is going on with the price, which currently shows in excess of 3k.

That said, it is a useful compilation of information on a wide number of technologies used in cellular communications today. I intend to keep it around as a useful reference about what is in practical use.

The p. 53 statement that at "UHF Frequencies absorption by 'molecular resonance' in the atmosphere (mostly water and oxygen)is a major factor in radio propagation" is an isolated major garble and makes one wonder about both the author and the reviewers who helped the editor. (These molecules are issues >40 GHz, NOT in UHF.)

The inclusion of 4 pages on UWB is also puzzling since there is little in commercial use and few see it having an impact on the other issues in the book. The brief DR and cognitive radio sections add little other than describing buzz words.
