The development of the Avro Arrow was a remarkable Canadian achievement. Its mysterious cancellation in February 1959 prompted questions that have long gone unanswered. What role did the Central Intelligence Agency play in the scrapping of the project? Who in Canada's government was involved in that decision? What, if anything, did Canada get in return? Who ordered the blowtorching of all the prototypes? And did Arrow technology find its way into the American Stealth fighter/bomber program?

When Storms of Controversy was first published in 1992, its answers to these questions sent a shock wave across the country. Using never-before-released documents, the book exploded the myth that design flaws, cost overruns, or obsolescence had triggered the demise of the Arrow.

Now, in this fully revised fourth edition, complete with two new appendices, the bestselling book brings readers up-to-date on the CF-105 Arrow, the most innovative, sophisticated aircraft the world had seen by the end of the 1950s.

For those wanting to dig deep into all of the factors and possible reasons surrounding the cancellation of the arrow, this book is for you. But for those with more of a passing interest this will be a bit dry. Also for all of those who care about the aviation industry and preserving skills and industrial capacity, particularly if you are Canadian, this is a deeply depressing story and the user is left with a feeling of anger towards the Government of the day. To sum up, the Government lost their nerve, wrote off all of the prior investment, ignored the strategic implications of retaining the skills and capabilities and destroyed everything in favor of obsolescent or useless equipment from America which required fresh money to be found. It would have been more understandable if the Arrow was not any good but in fact it was incredibly capable and would have astonished the world had the more powerful Mk 2s with the new Canadian engines been allowed to fly. The tragic brain drain that followed just compounds the agony. Overall I recommend this book for anyone not familiar with the Arrow story and wants to know more about this incredible aircraft.

Another good look at the Avro Arrow debacle as told from another perspective. Nothing really earthshattering is revealed, but taken in conjunction with Fred Smye's book and others the whole sorry story becomes clearer. Not until Mr. Dieffenbaker's personal notes become public will the whole story come out, but until then, this is a must-read for Arrow buffs and a should-read for all Canadians. (This is why you're the "51st state.")

The book itself is rather short, and is printed in a huge font that could be read from across the room - great for the nearsighted, but I felt kind of ridiculous - like a first-grader - reading font that big.
Sorryyy
Canada got screwed over by the US and their own government. This would have been the greatest plane of its time.

Very informative interpretation of the events leading to the cancellation of one of the most impressive supersonic aircraft ever created. Much of the technology that went into this marvel we call the Arrow only exists in ALL of today's modern fighter aircraft. Again a sad day in Canadian aviation history.

A very interesting book

Campagna worked for the Department of National Defence in Canada. As such he knows how the government operates when it comes to embarrassing information, and he also knows where much of it is stored.
Apparently he came to the conclusion that the Americans were behind much of the intrique that went on and in the end killed not only the Arrow program, but also the company itself! He does an excellent job of bringing forward documents which really demonstrate the undercurrent of intrigue, deceipt and cover-up that surrounded this program.
Campagna also includes a fair amount of information to demonstrate how first class the Avro products and engineering etc. really was. At the same time he allows the politicians to demonstrate their ignorance, wrong-headedness, and in fact manifest dishonesty over the program by direct quotations. The existence of a hidden agenda emerges yet Campagna restrains himself, for the most part, on speculation.
All in all an excellent effort. This book broke alot of ground and goes some distance towards pointing out what Canada lost on February 20th 1959.
If I have one criticism of the work, it is this: there isn't very much context about the aircraft being designed elsewhere, and about the industry and Cold War in general. I think this kind of context would have better demonstrated the Avro story in terms of its value to Canada and the West as a whole.

I read this this latest (4th Edition 2010) very carefully and found it to open up an enormous amount of information I was previously not aware of. The interesting thing I found was there were quite a number of culprits who contributed to the demise of this advanced aircraft who often rose to priority levels off an on throughout the period. Yes, the Americans had a role to play, as did the inept Conservative government of Diefenbaker, but so did the RCAF. Sadly, the project was killed by a number of influential players due to misinformation, protectionism, lack of vision and a spine. Anyone who can see both sides of a coin and is interested in this 'brilliant flicker in time' really must read this.
Really great history of a controversial aircraft and what might have been. Thorough research into actual information is quite interesting.
