This was a great book in planning and taking a road trip in Ireland. The descriptions was substantial enough to figure out if I'm interested in stopping by, yet short enough to be able to use this book on the road and not spend too much time reading it. Should probably be called "mile by mile", since most of the trips described are not walking trips. One thing that's missing is a good detailed road map or detailed route description. So if you are going to use this book - get a detailed map of Ireland roads. GPS will probably not be the best choice since it's just going to take you the fastest or shortest route, and that's not necessarily the one you want to take.
Reads like a coffee table book. I expected something more like a Lonely Planet guide as far as structure. Some interesting information, but if you are looking for comprehensive detail on where to stay, how to get there, and what to do, buy a different book.
i had to purchase this book for a study abroad trip to ireland. i also purchased 2 other books & looks thru a lot in libraries. i think this one was the best out of all of them. it was also easy to look thru while traveling.......
Will be visiting Northern Ireland early next year for 2 months. Book is very informative, and makes the trip we are looking forward to much more interesting. Would recommend it, or any of the series by Discovery.
This book is subtitled "the country's best walks and tours", but the only walks are entirely within cities (and there are lots of other books that do a much better job with city tours in Ireland - Walking Dublin (Interlink Walking Guides) is just one example). Almost every one of the 16 tour descriptions says, at some point, "a car is essential for this tour". If you want a book with walks in rural Ireland, skip this one and try The Independent Walker's Guide to Ireland: 35 Memorable Walks in Ireland's Green Countryside (The Independent Walker Series).

Also, this book is one of those that look like an advertisement for Adobe Pagemaker - lots of slick formatting, heavy glossy paper, little useful information. If you're never actually going to make it to Ireland, you might enjoy browsing through this one, but if you really go, you'll want something more substantial (in terms of content) and less substantial (in terms of weight) to take with you.
On planning a trip to Ireland (return trip for me, first trip for my kids) I wanted to dig up as much info as possible.

With so little time (and money) I wanted the most of what I had!!

After securing the Eyewitness guides and the Frommers guides, I stumbled upon Insights and was so impressed!!

It not only was a guide, but a reading book as well.

The pictures by far are the best!!

Looking through it makes me want to be there on my trip, NOW!

Let's just say, I HAVE to own this one!!

It's costly, more than the others, but well worth putting into your collection!
