I love the "feel" of these heavy little books which are made of glossy full color pages. The Great Britain Book is especially nice for giving an overview of the entire area. These books are not very good for getting you around when you are traveling and I rarely take them with me on a trip. The information listed about each city and sight is extremely limited, sometimes amounting to no more than a sentence or two. But I can't help giving them five stars anyway because I LOVE LOVE LOVE the DK Eyewitness Guides as my first introduction to a city, state or country. I own dozens of them. It's always the first book I buy when I'm considering a travel destination because it contains color pictures of almost everything. The book points out the most important sites to see and then shows less important places as well. The photos enable me to narrow down which places I want to visit. Even better than the photos are the in depth diagrams of places like churches and museums. After studying the map/diagram I have a good knowledge of how to get around the place once I arrive. These books are great "eye candy" and great arm chair reading. You'll still need to buy another travel book like a Rough Guide or Lonely Planet handbook but DK Eyewitness books are the place to start your travel planning.

I bought this book for my sister who is studying abroad in the UK and wanted to travel in the area. The best thing to me that stands out is that it is easily organized into regions of England, Scotland, and Wales. That makes it super easy to directly go to the section that matters the most when traveling. It is also heavily illustrated which also helps decide which things would be most interesting to go to and see in person. In the back are long lists of suggestions of where to stay, shop, and eat, again organized by place, which is so useful just for logistics when you're traveling. It is also very useful but not too bulky and long so it is easy to put in a backpack or suitcase without taking up too much space. Overall great book to have when traveling the UK.

The DK Eyewitness Travel Guides are my favorite travel books. No matter where we go- Italy, England, Mexico- these books are priceless. They provide detailed information by region with information on attractions, the area, food, culture, etc. The city books instead of country books are great as well (We bought the Rome book a few years ago).

Love the detailed information about each region, the maps and detailed information about the attractions. This gives you suggested walking routes in each area, times/locations/addresses/phone numbers/etc for each site. The write up includes brief history, overview, significant points, tips, things to see and do. Also gives the metro/tube/subway or bus information to get to each spot.

The book also includes good losing and restaurant information for each region as well though we usually default to trip advisor for restaurants. Probably the best part of the book for me in addition to the sites in each area are the city maps which are detailed enough you can find your way around without needing a separate map.

DK's "Eyewitness Travel Guide Great Britain" is another in a terrific series of regularly-revised, comprehensive travel books. This guide is a colorful, well-arranged, and fascinating source of just the kind of detailed infromation needed to plan to a good vacation or business trip to Great Britain.

"Great Britain" opens up with maps and a short history lesson, then proceeds to cover the country by region, beginning with London, the UK's great city and most frequently visited location. The guide then works its way around England, Wales, and Scotland before closing out with some practical general information on arriving in and traveling around Britain, along with suggestions for places to stay and eat.

Each regional section offers a survey of the geography and suggested routes for touring. The short descriptions of the principal tourist attractions, whether castles, historic homes, museums, parks, cathedrals, or outside recreation sites, are accompanied by photographs, area or street maps, and in some cases, detailed cutaway diagrams of prominent buildings. The descriptions typically include useful details on hours of operation and telephone numbers. A visitor armed with this guide and perhaps a motoring atlas would be very adequately equipped to travel around Britain, and have no excuse for being bored.

Great Britain offers an astonishing array of historic sites and beautiful landscapes. Those looking for world-class shopping and culture can surely find it in London. Those seeking outdoor recreation will find it in the Highlands of Scotland, the Peaks and Lakes Districts in England, and in mountainous Wales. Most of the country can be reached by public transportation, for those uneasy about driving on the left on Britain's extensive motorways.

This guide is very highly recommended to travelors planning a trip to the British Isles. Great Britain itself is also highly recommended as a fascinating destination.

Definitely a good place to start, to get a cursory sense of where you're going.

The guides are:
+ Easy to navigate and understand; things are clearly organized
+ Large in scope -- this book covers pretty much every square mile of Great Britain in some way
+ In color with lots of pictures and maps (I'll admit, I'm a sucker for aesthetics, but I just do not get those guide books that are all black and white with no pictures... it's not a novel, it's something you're going to peruse leisurely for some info!)

The drawback is that it's not completely comprehensive. A drawback of it being broad in scope is necessarily that it's not very deep. You'll probably find yourself wanting to turn to other sources (another book, the internet), to get more info on one particular thing (a town, a specific shop, etc) when a review in the DK guide piques your interest.

Overall though, it's worthwhile and useful when you're looking for something to point you in the right direction of places to go and things to see.
