Start by marking The Xenophobe's Guide to the Spanish as Want to Read: Want to Read savin. ant to Read. Surprisingly, I only mildly chuckled with this one. The picture of the Spanish seemed less clear, more firmly rooted in the 80's-90's (this book was written in the 90's and it looks like it hasn't been updated much since) and less fun than the other ones.

By Nick Lawson and Drew Launay. Humorous explanations for the Spanish way of life. A guide to understanding the Spanish that views them with the same light-hearted attitude that they themselves display in life

By Nick Lawson and Drew Launay. What makes the Spanish SPANISH: A guide to the Spanish that shows there is more to them than sangria and siestas. I have read many of the ‘Xenophobe’s guides’ and this one, once again hits the mark, spot on! I have several Spanish friends and have lived in Spain for several months and this book reminded me of many of the funny incidents I’ve had with the Spanish. A guide to understanding the Spanish that views them with the same light-hearted attitude that they themselves display in life. Highly informative and amusing.

Extracts from the book Fun in the sun: Anyone attempting to understand the Spanish must first of all recognize the fact that they do not consider anything important except total enjoyment. If it is not enjoyable it will be ignored. You can't buy happiness: The happiness of the individual is considered to be much more important than money. The goatherd who strolls the countryside with his animals breathing in the fresh air and loving his problem-less life is much more admired than the wealthy industrialist who hasn't time to enjoy life and spends quite a lot of his earnings on medicines to calm his peptic ulcers.Sexplicit: In Spain lust is ever in the air. There is nothing about the Spanish appreciation of sex that is inhibited or restrained. It is accepted that both men and women love making love, which is why there are very few sexual crimes in the country.

I bought this for a friend of mine who moved to Spain (not having ever visited Spain or even Europe). After a month or so of living and working there he told me that it was spot-on and was very thankful to have read it before his move. It is short and easy to read, and could easily be read on a transatlantic flight over there.

This book is very superficial and written from the point of view of an English person who has visited Spain on a cheap package tour with inncluded bad food, does not speak Spanish and has met only the Spanish equivalent of English Soccer hooligans. I have been to Spain 4 times, speak Spanish and do not agree with the author's impressions, except about the Spanish love of danger and brushes with death. If you read only this book, you might not go to Spain
and that would be a great mistake, because it is very beautiful and most of the people are dignified and polite. And the fresh seafood, rice, fruit and vegatables
are delicious.

You can come away from any culture with any ideas. The author is trying to stride the line between Northern Europe's culture and the Iberian one. Some things had to be said, about the strange Spanish attitude towards time, their pride, and even their typical Latin easy-goingness. But this is a two-dimensional view, perforce, and there is little to distinguish some aspects of Spanish character delineated here from that of the other Latin cultures (esp. Italy and perhaps even southern French).
Well, maybe one shouldn't expect so much from such a short work after all.

I don't know whether the author intentionally wrote a parody. It is easy to convince people that the Spanish people are actually like this, but they're not. I just came from there last October. I spent almost a whole month with them and they're nothing but friendly, helpful, considerate and welcoming.

This book is a witty and very clever look at Spanish society. I found most of what I read to be so incredibly true that I was laughing out loud. There are some parts which I found to be less than accurate, in my experience at least, and for that I give it four stars instead of five. Other than that, I highly recommend it. Do take it with a grain of sand however.
Exellent
good coverage of all spanish quirks. my friends in spain loved it

I'm a Spanish and I enjoyed this book very much because everything it says is true. All the topics are treated with lots of humour and that makes the book really enjoiable. Furthermore, while you are having fun reading the book you learn of the Spanish way of life...
It was true 10 years ago but everything goes fast in Spain.
