This is only the first half. It's been cleaned up so the spelling is all corrected, and maybe some grammatical corrections too. This makes it a little more accessible and easier to read, especially for teenagers on up So if you want the actual, original try another one; the Stephen Ambrose book is very thorough. Nonetheless, if you've never read this, it's a fascinating journal. As we sit in our climate-controlled homes, microwaving popcorn and watching TV, this book will be a striking contrast... a stark reminder of the hardships, courage, sacrifices, and long-term vision that built our country.

I enjoyed reading this journal because I was able to learn some things that are not discussed in our history classes in school. What an adventure? I wanted to get the feel of a journey into the unknown. I found it here. I was amazed that they had so many encounters with white bears along the way. They were not defined as polar bears back in the day. My understanding of the various Indian tribes is improved. Their challenges are documented here and allow the reader realize that they had to worry about their enemies and subsistence on a daily basis. There is a Volume 2 that is needed to complete the story. I was eager to learn about the reaction to finding the giant trees on the west coast. A great deal of notes regarded the description of various plant life and animals along the way. Those trees would most likely astonish them. One other point to mention is that they we were taught about Lewis and Clark is that we generally only hear about Sacajweaha. They must have had about 50 men in their expedition. The hunters killed scores of game to feed themselves along the way. I highly recommend this read for any who are interested to learn more about this historical mission to boldly pursue the unknown.

Have read other L & C books in the past but nothing like this. It's dry in places, admittedly, but where it's good, it's REALLY good. You're reading an actual account of everything; every turn in the river, every bush, every everything so those parts can get a little yawn-ful but when you get to the good stuff, like meeting native people who have never seen a white man before, WOW, it's gripping. These guys had guts and nerves of steel. You have to admire what they did.

A fascinating account of the first exploration of the Missouri River, the journey over the Rocky Mountains, and the Columbia River to the Pacific ocean. Many details, it's an account covering flora, fauna, geological features, anthropology, primitive medicine and more. While the extreme detail can make the storyline a bit dry in places, this work was never intended as a story; it's an accurate diary of the journey to discover the Northwest Passage, commissioned by and reported to Thomas Jefferson. It's a tribute to diligence and men's commitment to overcome all obstacles to achieve a most worthwhile goal. A fascinating read!

If you are expecting spine-tingling adventure don't read this book. I found this book compelling, feeling I was in touch with Clark. As I travel the roads across this beautiful country I reflect on how the landscape looked in the early years of exploration and what life was like in the early settlements. The landscape has been changed through the centuries, cities were built, the course of rivers changed and dams built. The read is simple and to the point - it is a journal not a story.

Factual account of Lewis and Clark's journey across America to the Pacific Ocean. These journals, like diaries of Samuel Pepys and Alexis de Tocqueville, are far more convincing, far more accurate and as a result far more enjoyable than any second or third hand history we may read.

Many have never read the early exploratons of the Land purchased from france. What beautiful, dangerous country. Actually never been there but my travels in the SW remind how of the hard life of Lewis & Clark like Powell who first explored the Colorado river. Magnificent
