A collection of maps with various restaurants, drug stores, grocers, etc. indicated with appropriate labels and listed on the opposite page. Now, if I had been looking for a walking atlas, I am sure this would do nicely (if I were driving I want a bigger map that covers more ground per page).

What the publishers chose to offer instead is a Seattle atlas. A collection of maps with various restaurants, drug stores, grocers, etc. indicated with appropriate labels and listed on the opposite page. Now, if I had been looking for a walking atlas, I am sure this would do nicely (if I were driving I want a bigger map that covers more ground per page).

Presumably the restaurants marked on these maps were selected with care and are given the editor's seal of approval. However, how will I ever know why I should go there if they don't present a case for them? There are a million places to go in Seattle. A 'guide' needs to answer the question, why should I go to 'X' location? And this book simply skirts that responsibility.

Perhaps the insult to injury here is that every map starts off with a clever little editorial on the neighborhood. Example, they joke about still being able to find heroin on the right street corners in Belltown. I would LOVE more content like this. Give me a feel for the place, sell me on the location and why I should go. All you give me now is a cruel tease of your intelligence and wit.

I can find the nearest restaurant or grocery store with the 'Yelp' app on my Droid far faster than I can with this book. My recommendation? Go with Lonely Planet Seattle instead, there is even a new edition coming out in March of this year.

For those who complain that the book doesn't offer reviews of businesses, they need only turn to the back of the book, where all businesses broken out by neighborhood in the front are cross-referenced and offer concise reviews of the establishments. This book does have everything that you want, as long as you actually read it all.
